Question about GE WSXH208A Front Load Washer

1 Answer

My GE front load washer is thumping when the washer basket is at a specific spot in the spin. It sounds as if something is hitting in between the washer basket and the drum at the lowest part. I can turn it with my hand and hear the basket hitting something on the bottom of the drum when the same part of basket passes over it and at no other time. I took the drain hose off the bottom of the drum to feel around but can't reach the rear of the drum where they seem to be hitting. This all started after i did a load that was probably too large. Is this more than likely a drum bearing? Please help me determine what this could be and if it is worth having it repaired. Thank you.

First watch the drum as you rotate it,if it runs out of round, its not the bearings, but the spider on the back of the drum that holds it on the drive spline,if you notice strips of plastic in the pump this is a good sign of a bad sapider, dont use as if this shatters it can throw the tub out, call g.e. and get a recall on the tub,i got a customer a full refund on a g.e. like this and a new washer call them dont use for your safety

I have a GE front-loading washer. There is a horrible thumping noise as the drum turns. It is not constant - when I turn it by hand it seems to "thump" on every rotation of the drum. I ran it...

The thumping sound is a sure sign that the spider arms or the support arms that hold the wash drum are broken. It is a very expensive repair since you need to buy a replacement wash drum and spider arm assembly which almost cost as much as new washer. Get a few estimates before deciding whether to repair or replace the washer. Sorry.

On spin the machine knocks loadly and "walks" on the floor. Machine is level, on a sturdy floor and the feet are positioned so that it cannot "rock back and forth" (i.e., this is not your typical "unlevel"...

A failed bearing will make a rumbling sound as the basket spins. The faster it spins the louder the sound gets. I would check to see if the spider arms are broken. If you turn the basket by hand, if you hear any kind of thumping sound as you turn the basket, this could indicate the one or more of the spider arms are broken. If they are, it is an expensive repair.

Hi, Welcome to FixYa.
Based on your description this is what it sounds like. 1) The basket drive block has worn or come loose and the spin tub from the basket drive is "clunking" as it skips by the notches in the block. 2) The basket drive spin tub may have broke from the hub/base or both are worn as a result of prolonged "thump, thump, thumping". Hopefully the prior not the later. **Unplug the washer from the wall before attempting any DIY service/repairs...safety first** You'll need to remove the agitator, (the cap) and then the 9/16" or 1/2" or possibly a 7/16" bolt in the center...it may look nothing like a bolt, it may be a plastic block but it still screws off counter-clockwise.

Pull the agitator and inspect the block/hub in the center directly below the agitator which holds the basket in place. if it looks worn or is out of place, you'll likely need a tech.

If you can tackle it yourself, the block number is #389140. You want to be sure the spin tube still has the two notches in it though, otherwise the changing of the block will be futile.

Check that, and let me know how it goes and what you find.

Good Luck macmarkus :)

I have a zanussi washer/dryer but lately its making so much noise !! its driving me nuts please tell me what it could be ?? thanks

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. If your washer is a front load washer then check these things if it is making noise--
Bellows
The bellows is a rubber sleeve that seals the suspended outer tub to the stationary cabinet front at the tub opening. Its purpose is to provide a water tight opening into the tub that can be sealed by the cabinet door, yet allow flexibility for the oscillation of the tub during the wash and spin cycles.
Outer Tub Assembly
The outer tub assembly is supported by two suspension springs and stabilized by two air shock assemblies. A cement counter weight is mounted to the front of the outer tub by screws. A counterweight is molded into the rear half of the outer tub. These counterweights prevent excessive oscillation of the entire suspended assembly during an unbalanced spin cycle.
Spin Basket Assembly
The spin basket is constructed of stainless steel. The circumference of the basket is perforated to allow water to flow through it as it revolves. A heavy steel shaft is pressed into the spin basket support which is then bolted to the basket. The spin basket assembly is entirely supported by two ball bearings pressed into the rear of the outer tub. A large drive pulley is mounted to the free end of the shaft that extends through the rear of the outer tub. There are three plastic vanes mounted to the spin basket to aid in the washing action during the wash cycle. The rotation of the spin basket provides both the washing action during the wash cycle, and water extraction during the spin cycle.

High pitch "jet engine" noise--A certain amount of motor whine is normal during the spin cycle.

Rattling and clanking noise--
• Foreign objects such as coins or safety pins may be in drum or pump. Stop washer and check drum. If noise continues after washer is restarted, objects may be in pump.
• Belt buckles and metal fasteners are hitting wash drum. To prevent unnecessary noise and damage to drum, fasten fasteners and turn items inside out.

Squealing sound or hot rubber odor-- Washer is overloaded. Do not overload washer. Stop washer and reduce load.

Thumping sound— Heavy wash loads may produce a thumping sound. This is usually normal. If sound continues, washer is probably out of balance. Stop washer and redistribute wash load.

Vibrating noise--
• Washer is not resting firmly on floor. Move washer so it rests firmly on floor. Adjust leveling legs. NOTE: Some shaking of the washer is normal without moving across the floor. See INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS for details.
• Shipping bolts and foam blocks have not been removed during installation. See INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS for removing shipping bolts and foam blocks.
• Wash load unevenly distributed in drum. Stop washer and rearrange wash load.

Please do rate the solution and revert for further assistance.

Thanks

Rylee

I'm having a similar problem. Mine sounds like there is something behind the drum, like maybe a coin or loose nut? It screeches horribly.

I have a sears roebuck hd model 92279100 it will do everything but spin. We used to be able to lift up on the agitator and it would spin, but it won't do it now.

sounds like you have a bad drive block and basket drive you will have to remove the agetator to see the drive block. under the agetator there will be 2 small peices remove those. After that you will be able to see the drive block and basket drive ears. there are 2 slots that the basket drive fit into. if there are metal shavings and it does not look flush with something. this would be your problem. spin the drum and see what happens in that area. Have you ever heard a sound like thump thump thump? when it was spinning or slowing down? please let me know how it goes

Whirlpool ultimate care II tub has a flat spot while spinning

this sounds like you have a worn tub drive block. you will have to remove the cabinet and then the tub cover, agitator and then tub nut. the nut is large and has a special spanner wrench to remove it, but you might be able to remove the nut with a large pliers or pipe wrench. the nut is cheap, usually about 7-10 bucks, but it is hard to get to and it will ruin the basket drive shaft if you let it go too long. so best to fix as soon as you can or it will cost alot more to replace both the block and the basket drive.

FRIGIDAIRE DISHWASHER NOISE

Usually this is caused by a long spoon or something similar being hit with water and slapping the inside of the dishwasher. Also, it could be the rinse arm spinning around and hitting a tall dish or utensil in the basket below. Check to see if the arm spins all the way around before you start your load. Also, make sure all dishes can't easily move and hit the inside of the washer.

Washer thumper

The thumping could also be a belt issue if it has a flat spot in it, especially if its a Frigidare Hybrid GE. To get to the element, sorry to say it, but will have to remove the drum and front of machine to get to it. Ohm out all the thermostats and thermofuses first. If it has the round element behind the drum (which it should) check the heater wire for breaks. If its a true GE it will have two wires, Frigidare Hybrid will only have one. Good Luck!!! Jim
