Question about Grip Rite Hardwood Flooring Cleat Nailer [Misc]

Open Question

I'm laying down a hardwood floor in my bedroom which is situated over top of my garage. A guy at the flooring store said to put down a vapor barrire before installing the floor to prevent moisture from coming through and affecting the wood. Wouldn't that create a problem since there is already a vapor barrier in the garage ceiling? Putting a second one would trap moisture in between the floor joists wouldn't it? Does this guy even know what he's talking about? Your thoughts?.... Thanks, Justin

Do i need an underlay for my plywood floor, and where do i start laying my bedroom floor

Depends on what thickness of plywood you have and what flooring you are going to put down.
Old school used 3/4" particle board over 5/8"plywood. ...particle board Is so susceptible to so many problems. It was called underlay as well as carpet pad and the pad under laminate or engineered snap together flooring systems. Sooo, need more definitive info to answer your question.

Home Flooring - Some Great Suggestions

If you're moving home or just doing some renovations, you might be faced with the question of what flooring to choose.
There are so many different options other than just plain carpet in a house, but each choice comes with pros and cons.
Here's my basic guide to flooring choices.

  • Carpet:
Okay, so carpet gets a really bad rap as being very 70s but put in the right environment, I still believe that carpet can be a great asset.
Even though it might seem expensive, you can get really good sale offers on carpet, depending on the season.
Also carpet is very hard wearing and so a good option if you're looking for a long term flooring solution that won't need replacing too quickly.
What I love about carpet is its softness, so it's great in cold countries or for rooms where you want to bring a softer more soothing look to the design.
The problem with carpet though is how it gets stained very easily and can be harder to clean. I sometimes worry that despite all the vacumming and carpet cleaning, carpets might be hiding a lot of dirt underneath.

  • Hardwoods:
Hardwoods are the latest trend in flooring. The costs really vary depending on the quality of wood that you go for.
Installation is also important - it not only costs money for the installation but needs to be done by a professional as hardwood flooring isn't something you can experiment with.
Hardwood floors look great and are much easier to clean than carpet. I find that some hardwood floors are a bit loud to walk on but putting rugs down can help with that.
Lounges look amazing with hardwood floors and modern furniture.

  • Tiling:
Tiled floors look wonderful but it's not a cheap material for flooring a large area and requires a big investment of time and money to install.
Personally I love tilling in bathrooms and kitchens and as it's water resistant it's perfect for rooms where spillages are a common occurance.

I suggest that you look around showrooms. Don't limit yourself to one style of flooring thoughout the whole house. You can mix and match between hardwood flooring and carpets.
Have Fun!

How do i finish a doorway threshold going from hardwood to linoleum, there is a height difference, the hardwood is lower.

You need a reducer strip. Find a local hardwood flooring supplier and tell them the height difference between the two floors and the length of the opening. Once you have the right reducer find a wood stain that matches your floor. Next stain the reducer and finish with either a high gloss or matt finish polyurethane coating available in a spray can. Once the piece is finished your ready to install it. If the subfloor is wood then you can nail it down and putty the holes. If your subfloor is concrete then you will need to glue it to the floor with some liquid nails. Apply the glue to the bottom of the reducer put into place and weigh it down for 24 hrs.

How do I stop certain parts of my hardwood floors from squeaking? It's in an up stairs bedroom .

The good news about your squeaky floor is that you have many options for repairing it. Most home improvement stores sell squeaky floor "kits" that may be all you need. Before even heading to the store, try pouring baby powder into the squeaky spot(s). This will absorb the space between the boards and may be all you need to finally get some peace..

Orech scratching hardwood floor ???

I would recommend using another cleaning method developed for use on hardwoods. It seems to me like even if you replace the wheels, eventually they will wear down again, causing more damage to your floors. Check home depot, ask them what the recommend. Hope I could help.
