Question about Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-P72 Digital Camera

Sony Cybershot DSC-P72 camera

When I view the pictures I just took on my camera some of them are good but others are flashing fast on the screen, and zooming in and out rapidly. When I tried to download them to my computer from the memory stick they would not appear with the rest of them. What is my problem?? Did I lose all these pictures? Please help!

Yes, it has a movie mode. It is called a MPEGMovieVX Smart Zoom. What does that mean?

Has this camera got Movie Mode?

It mean it is able to take Movies- albeit small ones]
So if you inadvertantly have it in this mode that is what you get
A movie not a still picture.

Movies take up a lot of memory on the card so you wont get many.
Always make sure the camera is properly set up to the mode you want to shoot in.

It is also a very good idea to READ THE MANUAL
There is usually a more comprehensive manual in PDF format on the CD.

My sony cybershot 3.2pixel camera tells me that the memory stick is locked What can I do to fix it.

The lock switch is located on the bottom of the Memory Stick, next to the connectors (see picture below). Move the switch to the other end of the arrow to unlock the Memory Stick.

I have a cybershot DSC-P72, lens doesnt open anymore, batteries are ok. picture review, and setup work ok.For a while it would open then close straight away, but not anymore.

This camera needs really strong batteries. Even if the batteries work great in other devices they might not work in this camera. Buy some FRESH (yes check the date and get the ones that will expire the latest) Alkaline Batteries and give it a try. Rechargeable (NiCad) batteries never worked for me. This is the very reason I got rid of my P92 (same camera with higher 5.1m pixel optics)

When I turn my Sony Cybershot dsc-p72 on, i am able to view my pictures, but when i try to take a picture the screen is black and it makes a whirring noise. Then the camera turns off automatically. How can...

Confirm if you're using a fully charged Battery with the Camera. Check if you're able to playback the images normally. Then, try to reset the Camera by either pressing the Reset button when the Camera is in ON condition or by removing the Battery and pressing the Power button for 1 minute and reinsert the Battery. Unfortunately, if the issue persists your Camera requires service.

You can create the service request at the following page: www.eservice.sony.com

Quality too low for 4x6 prints

A P72 should be good enough for 4x6 prints. Are you shooting at the maximum resolution? At 3.2 Megapixels you should be able to print at 4x6" at 250dpi (which although not ideal is better than that of most magazine printing!)

The graininess of your images is not to do with resolution but rather sensitivity and the processing engine in the camera. Are you shooting in bright light, or mainly with the flash? If it is the latter, I'm afraid you're always going to have the picture noise (graininess) with this camera.

If you're going to upgrade, look for a model with good low light capabilities and a good lens. www.dpreview.com is an excellent resource for comparison shopping.

Question about the DSC-P72

Yes, that is normal for the P72 to black out. I only know from experience of playing with it, not from a technical reason for it, but if I had to make an educated guess I would say it's because you're not getting as much power out of AA's as you do from a lithium-ion (like the one you have in your s85), therefore it takes longer, and most likely all of the power it can put out to get that flash charged; it does take a lot of power, as you probably know after about 40-50 shots you're through a set of AA's. As for the short picture review delay after shooting, also normal from what I've seen; it seems like the newer Sony cameras, especially the lower priced models have a very short review period. Of course, as was mentioned you can always just press the the left button out of the four buttons centered around the enter button in order to do a quick review. I personally don't own the P72, so if one of you P72 owners out there experiences something different, we can find out, but I think it's safe to assume your camera is acting quite normally.

Sony Cyber-shot Digicams - Picture Quality !?!?!?

I'm assuming you purchased a Sony as replacement. If that's the case, take it back and ask for a new one or have it checked out. Something sounds horribly wrong to me. If by chance you got one of those Chinese/Taiwanese cameras. Give it away and go back to the P72. Of course, a few hours reading the manual and playing with the camera may solve your problems. Don't try to get fancy first off. Stick with Auto modes until you get a feel for what you're doing. If you are using Auto the go back to the first sentence :-) BMW
