Question about Rheem 47 GAL ELEC SHORT Water Heater 6YR SC 82SV502

1 Answer

I have the Rheem 47 gal Short Electric Water Heater 82sv502 that is roughly 5 years old. I have been getting the infamous sulpher smell, I have drained it once and now am getting the same problem. Is there an inlet valve on this water heater to put some bleach in it to take care of this problem once and for all. I loooked for the annode and could not find it either to put it in there. I wanted to check it while I was at it and be able to fix my sulpher problem. Can you tell me what I have to do ot get some bleach in there to disinfect it.

Use 2 pints of hydrogen peroxide instead of bleach.

1) You need to replace anode rod, and 2) flush water heater with hydrogen peroxide:
Following links have information and instructions for anode rod:

http://www.waterheaterrescue.com/pages/WHRpages/English/Longevity/water-heater-anodes.html

To find anode rod, see if manual shows image.
Some rods are hidden under metal cover of tank.
Some have circular plug located on top of tank.
Some heaters have 2 anode rods > this would be on 12-15-lifetime warranty tanks
Some anode rods are connected to hot or cold water nipples.

Water spilled out of plastic seal on lower drainage pipe

I would need a better description of plastic seal or a good picture It is possible it could be replaced but might be cheaper to buy a new heater given it's age. They do not manufacture as long lasting equiptment as they did in the 50s 60s and 70s

Sounds like a squirrel inside water heater

Check your thremostat setting if it is set to highest position it may be causing some of the noise over heating the water and making the noise. And you can put an insulated jacket on it to maybe help with sound.

Sounds like a squirrel inside water heater

Hi,
The noise is inherent in electric hot water heaters. It is the noise that the water makes when it is being heated by electric heating elements. Mineral buildup on the elements can make it worse, so changing the elements can help...but will not totally elimenate the noise. When I install a new tank and turn it on all I have to do is listen to it to see if it is working or not...even brand new will make a sound...it is the sound of hot water... :-)
