If everything is connected according to manual, then your problem must be contact box inside the machine. If it is a recent model 2005 or higher then it could be the main pc board. I would start by checking the ground cable and clamp first before send it to a repair shop.

How to connect a Miller welding machine

Do you need information on how to connect the electrodes to use it, or how to connect to your garage/shop/house's power?
If it's a different type of plug than your outlet has the ability to receive, it likely means it's a 220 welder (as most welders are), and you would need a 220 outlet to plug it into. In which case, you need an electrician or someone else capable of wiring and installing a plug for you.
If you're wanting to know how to connect the electrodes to use the welder, the negative (black, generally) clamp needs to be securely clamped to a (preferably bare) metal area near where you want to weld. Usually problems with good ground connections are caused by not having the ground attached to bare, shiny steel. If it arcs at the clamp, it means it's not grounding well enough to work properly.

The arc sputters when welding. Tried changing the electrode tip and checked the ground.

I've had slot of experience with these migs. Usually when the arc sputters, it could mean 2 things, either the roller feed tension is too light, or the liner in the pistol lead is worn. It's the flex tube the wire travels through. If it's worn the wire will hang up or snag, causing the arc to sputter. If you tighten the roller tension, and the wire back-lashes, that's a sign to change the lead. First try adjusting the speed of the wire accordingly to the heat.

Hi:

If everything works but there is no arc; you should check your ground clamp, make sure it is not loose or dirty including terminals and replace your gun's contact tip.
Believe it or not this is a simple one.

If this was useful to you please vote. Thanks

Will not arc

Check ground connection at welder along with your ground clamp. Bad connection could be the issue. Also check settings on your welder.

I have a miller 90 amp firefly xl when i'm

  • You can try changing the tip,
  • keeping your arc length shorter - closer to the weldment.
  • if your machine has a burn back function, set that to the correct setting, it may be set to something by default,or have moved (not available on all machines).
  • check your ground clamp - make sure it is clean and securely connected.

Millermatic 140 w/ auto set powers on but will not feed wire or arc

If its a new unit its probably nothing. Miller makes good stuff. Open the side so you can see the spool. With the machine on, press the trigger for a second. Did the little wheel spin (trying to feed the wire) if it did then your problem could be kinked wire, **** on tip, or spring on small spool is loose and wire is slipping. Let me know.
