Question about Microsoft Xbox 360 Console

1 Answer

I have recently purchased a 4GB USB drive to transfer music etc to my Xbox 360. However, when I format it with my Xbox, and then put it back into my laptop, it tells me that there is no memory left. Also, no files are showing up as being on the drive even though it says its full. Then when I format it with my laptop again, all the free memory comes back. Please can anyone help?

I have a 320gb hard drive for my Xbox and when it is inserted it doesn't show on the dashboard for memory devises

In this process your hard drive will be formatted, so back up all files to another hard drive, laptop, or be prepared to lose everything on your hard drive. After you have backed everything up, plug your hard drive into an Xbox 360 then go 'My Xbox/System Settings/Memory.Select 'USB Storage Device/Configure Now' then accept the warning. After the formatting is complete a Performance Warning box will appear, click 'OK.' Now in the 'Storage Devices' screen you should see a new option 'Memory Unit.' This shows that the formatting was successful. Disconnect your hard drive, then connect it to your laptop, load on some media (makes sure the file types are compatible), then reconnect it to your Xbox 360. Your selected media should not appear under 'Portable Device' in the Video/Music/Picture Library.

Bought 4gb sandisk cruzer flash drive stored music from computer but it won't play the music on the car fm transmitter

a flash drive is used mainly for storing of files, you need a device that will play the files you want, in this case a device that plays mp3s and either transfer your music to/through it.
Unless your transmitter states that it plays different media formats that is but i have never heard of that before.
hope this helps.

I want to plug my WD 1tb harddrive to my xbox360 and steam music and video files from it. It is my understanding that my drive (which comes with the smartware) is pre-formatted to NTFS , and my xbox needs...

Ryan,

You'll need to connect the drive to a computer to format the disk. Once connected, click "My Computer" to view the drive. Depending on version of Windows, you may not have the option to choose the FAT32 file system. If you do have it, be aware that there are some limitations imposed by the FAT32 file system - most oppressive are the 32 GB partition size limits and the 4GB maximum file size (so those HD movies larger than 4GB won't transfer) . If you still want the drive to be a FAT32 drive, copy all the contents from the drive as this is a destructive procedure.

A full discussion from Xbox Forums can be found here (cancel the print prompt when displayed) and this link has download links and explanation of how to do it.

When plugging in to xbox 360. it doesnt recognise the hard drive so i cant play films or music

If you have the latest elements drive, it may be formatted to NTFS. The Xbox 360 cannot read NTFS, so the simple solution would be to format it to FAT32. The problem, would then be that you cannot transfer files larger than 4GB or a folders with more than 1000 files to a FAT32 drive.

Hope this helps

I created a music cd with mp3 format music. And my xbox wont read it.

thats because its in mp3 format. you dont have to have a disc to get music on your 360. theres a usb outlet in the back of the xbox next to the av cable connecter. if you got a usb cord just hook it up to the xbox. you should then be able to download content.

AUDIO FILES

your car stereo apparently only recognizes mp3
your ripped cds are probably in a different format such as wma (windoes media audio).
when ripping a cd choose mp3 as the encoder instead.
it should work

about changing order:
the order is alphabetical, you can change the order if you change the name. adding numbers in the beggining of all filenames should do it

Xbox 360 modding

You cannot transfer files to the Xbox 360, you can only stream the material eg songs or videos through it. You can put the items you wish to view on a usb memory stick, but again you cannot save them to your XBox 360 only play direct from the device you use to store the videos or music. You will also need XP media centre to use the media extender software, or even better Vista premium, XP home or Pro will not share the material with XBox because it cannot use the extender software.
