Question about Technics SL-PG450 CD Player

1 Answer

I have a fairly old SL-PG440 - the nearest to that I could find on the list. For some time the tray has been sticking intermittantly but now tries to come out and does not succeed. It seems to be a mechanical problem. I tried to repair it but could see nothing obviously wrong. Tony Reuvers (Sandton, Johannesburg, South Africa)

I got so frustrated with the CD player that I again stripped the unit and found a perfectly simple explanation for the "sticking" - one that may be of interest to you - the round rotating disc against which the disc is pressed during operation is covered with a hard foam rubber.

Through the aging process the rubber attached itself to the CD and thus did not allow the tray to eject. I have tried to clean the foam rubber which has helped to some extent but I may replace it with a local product that I will have cut to suit.

Mechanism problems with sets such as this are quite tricky to handle. When the mechanism seems to have problems coming out it usually is as a result of poor friction between the surfaces for the mechanism which enables the unit to roll out and in effectively. Since you say the unit is fairly old the first possible problem is wear and tear on the mechanical grids which control the movement of the tray.
Also the problem could have been caused by lack of enough power from the propeller which power the mechanism which controls the in and out movement of the tray. ALso a little grease on the mechanism would help.
But if it doesnt come out at all then the problem is with the propeller and you need an expert to help replace that with a stronger one.
Hope this solution has been helpful?

If the drive door sticks after you have used the paper clip to open it, look under the tray at the drive teeth (if any). Apply a liberalm coating of general purpose grease to the rwo inches of teeth at the end of the drive tray nearest you and close the drive door again. Open and close a few times to see if the door is now free. This worked for me on my Dell Inspiron 3100. Try it.

All my vinyl sounds warped on turntable

Most common problem is the belt getting soft, especially if it has sat for a long time. It will get a weak spot where it sat on the drive pulley and every time the turntable goes around and hits that weak spot it will slow down a little making it sound like a warped album.

The belts are usually very easy to replace. Usually just lift off the turntable or there might be a small clip on the center pin, then it lifts off. Replacement belts can be ordered from several places, as shown in this search... http://www.google.com/search?&q=SL-B200+Technics+turntable+belt

No sound on a Technics SL-PG450 CD Player I currently have a Technics CD player SL-PG450 which had issues reading discs. The machine would attempt to play then stop, then start again. At the point of reading a disc the unit would play as tho you were listening to the Chip-Munks until you skipped half way along the disc then it would play at normal speed. This behaviour was different everytime. Adjusting the lens focus had no effect, neither did adjusting the spin motor did anything either, so out came the laser assembly unit in place for another one. Having said that the laser didn't turn on half the time either. I also had a couple of the earlier model Technics SL-PG300 which I thought to make the attempt to establish a complete rebuilt working model out of the two players. I tested and compared the two assembly units along with the loading tray and switched over the two loading trays with its laser assembly in it from a SL-PG300 into a SL-PG450. The problem I have now, is that I had solved the reading issue in the SL-PG450 reads discs within a second or two, and searches and skips beautifully. The problem I am getting now, is no sound. Each time you play a disc you hear a small pop sound and nothing more, but if you listen using earphones through the unit you hear hiss and mutes this sound whenever the disc is skipped or stoppped. I compared the pin outs from the main PCB board between the two players leading towards the laser assembly unit as they were numbered and had writing on the PCB board at each pin as this was correct. What I can't follow, is that now the SL-PG450 reads and plays a disc fine, but no sound is heard from the unit. Any ideas? Cheers, Pete
