Try restoring the phone back to factory settings but hold down home button while plugging it in to itunes it should hopefully kickstart it into recovery mode..you cant get it to restore it may just been down to hardware issues in the phone, after all it is a 2g...you could also try getting an appointment in an apple store if you have no luck restoring and resolving problem but make sure you dont say youve opened the phone up.
Download the latest iTunes to your computer and reset the iPhone. Then re-sync it.
