When I turn on my camera I hear a beeping and I see a message saying that there is a problem with my camera's lens. What can I do to fix it? The camera was fine yesterday and no one touched it overnight. Please help me out. Thank you :)

The most common problem I see on fixya.com with compact digital cameras is 'dropping' them and then coming up with a lens error.

If nobody touched it though, it makes me wonder why it would suddenly come up with a lens error.

Do you have any roommates or family members who live with you who may have dropped it and put it back up where it was.

Anyway, depending on the brand and age, the unit will have to be serviced by a factory authorized center for a fee if service is available for your model.

Turns on for 1/2 second and turns off

It sounds like the focus element inside the lens is stuck. This is usually either due to an impact knocking the elements out of alignment, or to sand/debris entering the focus motor's gear drive and preventing it from rotating. The buzzing sound you hear is the focus motor attempting to rotate, but buzzing up against some obstruction. When the lens extends, you hear a buzzing sound, and then the lens retracts - this is usually the cause of the issue. Unfortunately there is not much you can do externally to fix this problem. The camera will need to be taken apart and repaired by a professional or by the manufacturer. David Millier http://advancecamera.com/repair

One thing to test before going to repair, make sure you are using a fully charged and correct battery for your camera.
If so, the camera will need repair. This is a common problem and can be fixed. Teleplan Camera Repair does a great job and their blog is also very informative.

Hi there, my Samsung WB500 camera can not get it's lens closed. It stands open all the time and is doing nothing. When I turn the power on, it 3 times makes a hard noise 'peep peep peep', no display and...

This is a common problem with cameras. They can get bumped when the lens is out, and that can jam the gear assembly, or break a gear. I could run down all the things you can try to free it up, but there is a better web page that deals with issues like this. The page deals with error messages for the lens, but the beeping you hear is an error message, also. Follow their suggestions to try to free the lens up- maybe you'll get lucky. They say that, in about 50% of the cases, it can be fixed by trying their suggestions. Here's the site:

If nothing works, make sure you get an estimate before getting the camera repaired. Sometimes the cost of repair justifies going ahead and purchasing a new camera, on sale, and is often less expensive than having it repaired. Good luck! Hope you get it working again!

Lens error. Restart camera.

This is probably THE most common failure among digital cameras. There's a halfway chance of fixing it yourself, described here: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html

Lens errors (E18 errors on Canons) are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

Camera wont turn on...gives beep sounds and green light glows when pressing power button

Does the lens extend in either of these cases? If there has been some malfunction in the lens and it fails to extend the situation can cause the camera to power-off in order to protect itself. Some cameras show error messages before powering off, others do not. Hold the camera up to your ear and turn the power on. Is there a series of mechanical sounds before the beeps? Hearing sounds but not seeing the lens extend indicates some sort of failure in the lens assembly. If you hear nothing then the problem most likely lies elsewhere, possibly a failed electronic component or something as simple as a loose connection. Check with your manufacturer for any recalls or technical bulletins, and see if they will service your camera under warranty. If not there are a number of repair facilitys available on the internet who generally have better rates than out-of-warranty service at the factory. David Millier Advance Camera Repair
