A crankcase heater is an electrical component in a compressor in an air-conditioning system, heat pump system, or chiller system. The crankcase heater is normally on all the time, even when the unit is not running, though temperature sensors and set points may turn it off when not needed. A crankcase heater's sole purpose is to prevent refrigerant migration and mixing with crankcase oil when the unit is off, and to prevent condensation of refrigerant in the crankcase of a compressor. The crankcase heater keeps refrigerant at a temperature higher than the coldest part of the system. A crankcase heater generally has the same electrical symbol as a resistor because it converts electricity directly into heat via electrical resistance. The resistance in the heater coil determines the heat it produces when voltage is applied

How to tell if your unit is a heat pump or just air conditioner with electric heat strip

PTH is a heat pump. PTC is an air conditioner only. I don't believe Amana makes electric heat strip-only models based on what I see in their literature. You can just do a google search and look for yourself.

How do I set my thermostat so that it doesn't keep going off and leaving me with no hot water .I have a Honeywell digital thermostat.

The problem is not your thermostat. It is the person who told you that your AC would be your sole source of hot water. The purpose of heat recovery is to ASSIST with hot water production and reduce the current used by your water heater. The only time your AC heats your water is when it is working to cool (or if it's a heat pump, cool and heat) your home. Turn your water heater back on and let your AC help keep the water hot. It's not supposed to do it alone.

Is it normal operation for these units to EVER blow out cold air or "nonheated" air when unit is in heat mode?

Yes. Heat pumps have to go into defrost just like a freezer when the temp gets too cold outside. The heat pump will temper the indoor air electric heat.
