I have an A530 Power Shot 5 mega pixel..it is an older camera about 3 to 4 years old. I have lost the how to booklet and need to format a new 1gb memory card. I found my way to the format screen but can't figure out how to change to 1GB. this is what the screen says: Check as follows:

_Format___________________________

Format memory card???
__________ 970MB

OKB used

< > Low Level Format

Cancel OK

I want to use a 1GB memory card . Please send me directions to format for this camera.

Thanks

have a Cannon Power Shot AS530 5 mega pixel Digital camera about 2 yrs old. I need instructions to format a new 1GB memory card for this camera. The 1st solution sent me to another website where I was instructed to use my computer to format memory card..Doesn't this camera have it's own capabilities to format, by inserting the card and going to the menu..that's where I get lost.. Maybe I should by a new camera!! I don't have any way of inserting memory card into computer. Please advise..

    Thank you

I think better download the user manual for your device so you have a copy of it this is the link http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=DownloadDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=320&modelid=12914

Hope that helps.......

1. Insert your memory card into your computer's reader if you have one. If not, you can purchase a multi-format USB Memory Card reader from Amazon.com or Buy.com
2. Open up 'My Computer'. You should see it under the list of available drives.
3. Check its contents first to make sure that you have the right drive.
4. In 'My Computer', right-click on the drive and choose 'Format'.
Leave all the options as they are and click on 'Start'. This is a non-reversible process so make sure this is what you truly wanted to do in the first place.
5. Once the process is completed, take the memory card out and insert it into your Digital Camera or any other device. Try to browse to it to make sure it works fine now.

    press menu
select setup tab by using the side button.
    now scroll down the menu.
you will see the option named format

once you enter it you will be asked as cancel or OK

you will also be asked as you want to check or uncheck the LOW levels format.
by default low level format will be checked status. so no need to change that option.

now give OK and format the memory card.

    now enjoy shooting photos.

    thank you

970mb is the size of the 1gb card. That is what you want to format. The actual size in megabytes will be smaller than what the card is labeled. Once it's formated it may be even a bit smaller. This is normal for all media.

Hello Myrna,
You do not need to set the size as the camera automatically "sees" it. So when you see 970MB that is the size of the 1GB card after formatting as the formatting process uses some of the memory. So just go ahead & press OK followed by "function set".

You can download the manual from the link below:

Setting my Samsung ST76 to 1MB photos

I do not complete understand what you want. My fuss is, you want every picture to be about 1 MB on your memory card. I do strongly advice against this, but you own the camera and so it be. You always can make pictures with a smaller resolution from high quality pictures, but never the other way around. You better shoot highest quality on your camera and later wham the pictures are on your computer down size the ones that are less important to 1 MB.
But you can choose 5 mega pixels with normal compression or 3 mega pixels with fine compression or 2 mega pixels with super fine compression. All these pictures will look fine in an e-mail, or on the net. Even a 6 by 4 inch picture will look fine. Memory cards will cost like 1 dollar pro Gbyte, so my advice is buy a few 8 or 16 Gb cards and shoot in high def.

What is the solution of format error message?

You need to Format or Wipe the memory card while it's in the camera. It should be somewhere in the camera's menu.

This issue commonly happens by deleting pictures that are on the memory card using your computer and not the camera.

Canon camera won't accept SD memory card

It's a good bet that anything 4GB or greater is a SDHC card (look on the card, see if SDHC is written there). Your A530 was designed before the new SDHC format came out. Sorry, but your camera will not recognize this type of card. Recommend instead that you get a 2GB standard SD card. They're relatively inexpensive these days.

Memory card for Olympus FE270

The larger the image, the more space it consumes, your new camera is producing files that are twice as large as the old one did. Buy a larger memory card, they are quite inexpensive these days.
