If you have tried all the commands (F2, F8, F12, etc), you should try booting it from a recovery disk. If you don't have one you should be able to download one from the Toshiba site.

Computer wont start or boot up cursor line on top blinks please help ?

Your computer can't find the OS on your hard drive. Most likely the boot sector has been damaged (or someone reformatted the drive). The entire hard disc may have failed.

Since this is a netbook, you will either need an external optical drive (USB) and a copy of the OS to boot from or a USB flash drive that has been prepared as a boot version of the OS. HP offers the Mini 5101 with WinXP Home, SUSE Linux or FreeDos. There may be newer versions with other OS options. Make sure to get the correct OS, even if you upgraded it.

You will need to boot to the optical drive or the flash drive. On other computers, this may involve accessing the BIOS to change the boot order. Look for a splash screen with the key information. Then turn off the computer and turn it back on while repeatedly pressing the key. (F1, Esc, Del, and F10 are common keys.) If you miss the timing, turn off the computer and try again.

If you are using XP, you will need to enter the Recovery Console. Then enter the command line mode. If your command prompt starts with any character other than C. Type C: then press Enter. Next type CD WINDOWS. Then try the BOOTCFG /REBUILD and see if a Windows OS is found. (type the command in and then press enter). Then type in the command FIXBOOT. This repairs the boot sector. You will need to confirm the commands. Type CD .. and CHKDSK /R /F to check for and fix damaged hard drive areas

If this worked, type EXIT. Try rebooting the computer. Otherwise use the command FIXMBR and then exit. Enter the HP recovery program (on the original hard disc or on Recovery discs, if you made them). Restore the computer to the original configuration with that program. If you ever did anything to repartition the hard drive, the recovery partition may not be accessible. You will lose any stored files and need to reinstall any programs you added to the netbook.

I hope this helps. Please note: losing this part of the hard drive may indicate that you have a failing hard disc. You will need to decide if you want to replace the drive or the netbook. If you decide to replace the hard drive, match the original drive size and data/power specifications (2.5" drive and SATA cable, probably). Use a USB/SATA/IDE hard drive adapter and a cloning software either added to the hard drive or from an optical disc to transfer the OS to the new drive and then set it as the boot drive before installing it in the netbook.

Notebook displays black screen with white cursor

Try running the Check Disk Utility.

To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc ora operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot fromit. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with whiteletters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice thepercentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run tocompletion. Then reboot machine.

If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows.Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs.

In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair whenthe options appear.

In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recoveryconsole and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command.

You may have picked up a virus that has corrupted windows, If you have the original recovery disc I recommend a complete re-install of your operational system, if it works the system should start up normally, failing this the hard drive would be the likely problem and will need to be replaced.

go to the start menu and key on the program lower tab. The go to accessories. Click on command prompt which takes you to the DOS screen.
Now you will see a blinking cursor on the black screen which all you need to do is to type in chkdsk /f /r

This will repair any programs that were not running correctly. after it is done your computer may reboot itself. If not reboot it and see what it does, Itshould work fine unless deeper problems in the EXE BATCH FILE is present

Macbook black will not start beyond the initial 'bong'. Blue screen followed by endless spinning gear. PRAM, SMV reset, no go. Safe mode can't complete. With battery or on power adapter same result....

Hello yang2699tlk,
Try this instead of using your Leopard Disc.

  1. Immediately after the "bong" press and hold down "Command + S".
  2. Wait for blinking cursor and then type fsck -y (exactly like that).
  3. If you receive an "Appears to be OK" then type reboot and hit the return key.
  4. If you receive a "Disk has been modified" then repeat the fsck -y command until you get an "Appears to be OK" then type reboot and hit the return key.

This set of commands entered in "Single User Mode" will repair your disk. If this does not work remove the hard drive, plug it into another Mac and transfer your data to a different computer. Then install a new hard drive and reinstall Mac OS X.

Hope this helps, don't forget to vote. Thanks.

Did you try Command prompt only? I think it will boot and give you command prompt like C:\>.
  • Try to remove RAM, clean its connection point and then put it again. If no success then try the followings.
  1. If you get command prompt just type SCANREG and press enter.
  2. Follow the on screen instruction, it will make a backup of system files and then will list previously well booted dates.
  3. Select any one date. It will restore system files of that date and will try to boot.
  4. Then Boot normally, if no luck then try again the above process to choose another date.
  5. If still no luck then its time to take a complete installation of your OS.
Good Luck

Is your HDD LED flashing? -Try pressing F8 on startup to show the boot menu option of your OS if it is Windows. If it does appear use Safe Mode first. If not successful try re-installing your OS.
