Refrig and freezer won't cool

Refrig and Freezer will not cool. Installed 6/21/2005

Any suggestions?
Comment by crappie16, posted on Jul 08, 2008 We did hit the reset button (inside refrig) and put the temp setting on max. Unplugged, let it set then tried again. However no cooling. There is no frost buildup, clean underneath.

I can hear a fan blowing from the location of the compressor, but I can't tell you I heard the compressor kick on.

I have a problem with the refrigerator and freezer not cooling on a Kitchenaid Superba KSYg25f. It is about 8 years old. I noticed a burnt smell and inspected the compressor relay/over load burnt terminal lugs. I replaced with very expensive kit. The compressor runs now but still not colling at all.
    Any ideas?

If it is not cooling at all then i would suspect the compressor is not running. this could be caused by the start switch on the side of the compressor not working. as a first step i would take off the start switch and inspect it. sometimes you can tell just by looking at that it is bad (melted plastic or burn marks or pieces rattling inside). let me know the results so we can go to the next step if needed.

Vegetables in crisper are frozen, as well as liquids in bottom 1/2 of fridge door. The fridge & freezer temp controls won't adjust to our settings. Also, we're getting ice, but no water will dispense.

The freezer cools the refrigerator, so you actually get very cold air passing from the freezer to the refrig. The air from the freezer enters the refrig on the top and falls to the bottom where it is drawn back into the freezer. The temperature of the refrig is regulated by a thermostat and a fan that runs when the thermostat calls for cooling. If the refrig thermostat is faulty and causes the fan to run more than it should, there will be a freezing problem in the refrig at the bottom because cold air falls and warm air rises. If the refrig is thermostat is calling for cooling constantly, this will take more cold air from the freezer than is normal. Your freezer temp might be higher than normal and the refrig will be colder then desired. If the fan from the freezer is running constantly I would suspect a bad refrig thermostat.

F/up on Frig section not cooling and at time appears to...

If the defrost timer is malfunctioning, and I think that unit has a mechanical timer, causing the defrost to cycle slower than it should, then yes... the coil can freeze not allowing air to pass through until the next defrost. One of the first things a repairman should check is the defrost circuit if the coil is frozen. Many times you would not notice unless you open the door alot or your freezer is quite full.

Kenmore sidebyside

Hi! There,,,If you want help, one needs to explain the problem.. A refrig is quite simple in opertion, with time used experience. For a side by side the freezer is cooled with the same system as the refrigerator cooling system. One and only. Freezer works, do you mean it is provining design temperature of some -10 deg F??? Do you have a by-pass duct between the the two. yes, then open it up more, disconnect motor is auto, and prop vent open, set refrig temp to a low temp say 40 deg F. are we cooling??? Post your condition, if you want further info Regards,,,fmauka
