Nothing to worry about, there are always extra connectors for different configurations.As long as you have the 24 pin and 4 pin connected to the MoBO and your CD/DVD drives and HDD are powered you'll be OK

SOURCE: I have an Acer Apire

Then all you need to do is replace the same connections with the connections that are currently plugged in and then plug in the hard drive, dvd drive power cables as well, just look at the plug you disconnect and then plug in that cable with the new power supply you can have the power supply sitting outside of the computer it doesn't really matter just make sure you all the power cords plugged in including their should be small one for the processor fan.
here are a couple videos that should help you;

Thank you,
Lee

Had a mge350wps, burnt out, replaced with dx-400wps, turns on but receive messages as follows. NTLDR IS MISSING PRI MASTER DRIVE (NONE) DISKETTE DISK A(NONE) DISKETTE DISK B (NONE)

As long as everything is plugged in you may have had a surge from the old power supply that damaged the drives. I have seen this happen. I hope it didnt happen to you but it may have. Do you have power to the CD/DVD drive. When you start the computer does a light come on on the front of the drive? Push the eject button on the drive and see if the drawer comes out. This wont eliminate the possibility of a damaged but it might help diagnose if your getting power to the drive. You should also listen to see if your hard drive spins up. If you disconnected the drive cables from the mainboard or from the drives make sure they are back on the correct direction. You should also try the system with just the Hard drive plugged into the mainboard. Since I have had a single bad drive make the system not boot correctly eliminating all but the main drive will help you see if it is a bad drive making everything not work. Dont forget to go into the BIOS and set all drives for Auto.
Hope this helps... Dale

The fuse is blown and the Model DX-PS350W is discontinued - what other power supply can I purchase that is compatible

you can use about any power supply you want as long as the physical size is the same. stay away from the really cheap ones. they weigh half of what a good one does and they cause problems with the computer. i did see amazo has a 400 watt Dynex on sale now, here is the link
http://www.amazon.com/Dynex-DX-PS350W-350-Watt-Power-Supply/dp/B000EVOOWA

also newegg.com is a trusted site to buy computer parts they sell the cheap ones as well as the top of the line and most all have user reviews.

Normally the front panel on/off power button and the front panel reset button plug into connector pins on your motherboard.

If you can find a User Manual for your motherboard it will show you exactly where the switch leads plug in on the motherboard. The motherboard's manufacturer and model number will be printed on the board somewhere.

Good luck.

Sounds like the power supply is not compatible with the motherboard. If the motherboard can't support a 400 watt powers supply you will either get a blinking light or nothing at all. Those optiplex's use a proprietory power supply because of the pin connectors and how a power supply is supposed to fit in there. If you can't find a 400 watt power supply that fits then get a hold of Dell and see if they sell one for that computer.

Any power supply with the same pins will do. Just choose a good brand and with same rating or better higher(400 watts or more).
