The hard drive is damaged and beyond repair. To get your laptop operating again, purchase a new hard drive, install Windows on the hard drive, plus the laptop's device drivers and your programs.

You have misalligned the read/write head. DO NOT plug the drive in, or attempt to use it. There is nothing you can do, since realigning the read/write head requires a dust-free environment and a microscope. You can call WD and try to get a warranty replacement, or you can sell it for parts and **** up your loss.

Your hard drive is missing from the system. Or, just does not recognize it. The obvious - Remove any USB devices like drives and any media from disc player. Its trying to load, but can't find bootable hard drive, CD, or USB... Remove the hard drive and reseat (reconnect). Check BIOS by pressing an F key during boot. Look on the screen for correct Function key. Might be F2 key. Verify BIOS recognizes the drive. It must be listed! There is no going forward if it's not. Check boot order and make internal hard drive first. Save and restart.

Your drive is probably toast. Back up early and back up often. If you reformat you will lose everything. This sounds crazy, but please bear with me. Remove the drive and place it in your freezer and get it as cold as possible. A deep freeze is best. Let it sit overnight. Be prepared to reinstall it and fire up the laptop as quickly as possible. You may get it to fire up and boot properly. If so, have a brand new drive that you can clone. Clone the new drive and replace the old one. It is no good. note: After you replace the drive, you might get away with a reformat and use it as an additional storage drive, but it will always be suspect. don't store anything you want to see again. Backup, backup, backup!!!

A disk read error occurred

Hard drives do not like being dropped even inside a notebook. It is a sure way of destroying a hard disk.
First - re-seat the harddisk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot andgo into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If itdoesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty.
Then the hard drive needsto be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer orlaptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioningcomputer/laptop again.

If the Windows installation CD cannot detect the hard drive to install Windows then the hard disk could be faulty or it may only need reseating.
First - remove the hard drive and connect it back into the laptop.
2nd - Boot up the laptop and go into the BIOS configuration and check if the BIOS detects the hard drive.
If the hard drive is detected then proceed with the Windows installation.
If the hard drive is not detected in the BIOS then most likely the hard drive is faulty.
In this case you need to replace the hard drive before you can install Windows.

Fogit it - you are fcked.

Only alternative you have at this juncture is to avail yourself of a data recovery service at great expense.

Sometimes a repair operation or diagnostic test on a finicky drive could permanently trash the unit or make it worse. That is apparently what happened to your drive.

In the future this incident should impress on you the fact that a hard drive backup of important data is always a must. All hard drives from the moment of manufacture start to die - we just do not know when!

Sounds like the hard drive may have been damaged and is no longer reading correctly, or there may still be some moisture in the system... if possible, remove the hard drive and blow a hair drier into the space, then try re-fitting hard drive...

If it still doesn't work, you could try re-installing the operating system... if that all doesn't work, you may need to take it to a specialist, as the mainboard may be damaged

The hard drive is behind the cover where the mic and earphone are located. Turn the laptop over and there is a single screw that secures this cover. Remove the screw then slide the cover and hard drive out. The cover and cradle are attached to the hard drive.
