Indicates it cannot find the hard drive, but to be certain, test it on an external monitor, if you still get the same issue, test as follows:

1.) boot into the Bios (either F2 F10 or Del) and see if the hard drive is recognised there
2.) Assuming the hard drive is seen in the bios, you may have lost the OS, without a DCROM drive it is difficult to reinstall this but not impossible. Try booting to safe mode (f8) and see if it will boot, if it does, go to My computer/C drive/right mouseclick and properties, run the repair utility which will happen when you next boot the laptop.

3.) If this does not resolve the problem, repost and I'll post a link to reinstall windows

You normally get a warning if the hard drive has died (no bootable hard drive or similar) and if windows is not present a warning that says (NTDL missing), did you get those on boot?

i am having the same problem with our asus laptop. When we try to turn it on the screen is black with a white line blinking at the top left corner. We took out the battery and it will come on but then when you shut it down and restart it does it again. Please help. We only bought this laptop a month ago

Can't get into safe mode

Have you tried rapidly tapping F8 as soon as you press the power button or did you just press it once? Dont wait for it to get to the blinking cursor page.

When I turn the netbook on, I get a black screen with a small white line blinking in the top left. None of the keys do anything when pressed.

This means on or more of your windows system files has failed. Try to revert back to the last known good configuration. To do this, just reboot the netbook then upon rebooting press F8 couple of times. it will take you to the Advanced screen. Select "Last known good configuration" then press enter. The netbook will reboot again and hopefully would get you into windows.

Please let me know if this works so i can povide other options if i doesnt.

Thank you for using Fixya.

The Top screen has a big black circle on it.

The top screen will need to be replaced. Your only options are to either to send it off for repair or to fix it yourself.

If you intend on fixing it yourself I have a couple of guides to help you...

DS lite dismantling guide.

DS lite top screen replacement.

Hope this helps, any problems or further questions please feel free to contact me via my profile page.

Computer displays black screen with blinking cursor

Its seems its not booting correctly. Just Insert Windows CD and fix the windows. Another solution is to press (I think) F1 or F11 or F12 (depending on the model) when booting the machine. It will take you to recovery mode. Use it to restore the boot section ONLY.

Emachines T2385 startup problem

Psu is a Power Supply issue but the black screen with a blinking white line is not.
The blinking white line can mean there is no instructions to tell the Computer to boot up. Which could be possibly the system battery (cmos) or Hard Drive.
I would narrow those 3 things down first.

check on the flat bed part along the top. there are two white strips that go side to side. the top white strip is wider than the bottom strip right underneath it. On the thinner of the two strips, check for small black marks, can be very small. This creates a black line in the document. You can clean it with a fingernail & a tissue
