I will try to help. Is this a laptop or dekstop PC?
What make is the computer (dell, HP, Acer, etc.) and also the model #
    OR
need info on the mainboard of the computer (if it was custom-built) A picture of the mainboard will suffice if you don't know how to find the information on it. If you remove the side panel and photograph the mainboard it's easy to find the rest of the information.

You should download the audio drivers for Windows XP from the computer manufacturer's website or from the motherboard manufacturer's site. If yours is a name-brand computer (Dell, HP, etc.), get the drivers from them. These companies often have custom versions of hardware made for them, and their drivers are the ones intended.

Reinstall those drivers and your sound should work again.

It is possible to get it back if you didn't format your hard drive during the installation process.

I would try to run the repair on the windows 2000 installation disk or take it to a data recovery expert.

If your using a card take it out until you have XP installed.
Go into your bios and disable all your audio settings until you have XP installed.
Check and see if your audio is even compatible with XP.
Disconnect the any external devices that are connected to the audio input until XP is installed.
