Hi Brad,
I apologize for the delayed response - you may have already resolved this, but here's a quick update anyway.
Based on the issue that you're describing, it sounds like there's a fairly good chance that Text Messaging and/or Multimedia Messaging may not be properly provisioned on your wireless account.
To resolve this, you'll likely need to contact Customer Service and check to see whether you have SMS or MMS features listed on your account and what those features cover. (If the services are listed on your account, check to see whether the services are pay-per-use or bundled.)
Let us know whether or not you were able to resolve the issue!
Thanks,
Jonathan

Interesting... thanks for the update Brad!
SMS and MMS travel over a different range of frequency from standard voice communications, but it's not AT&T-specific bandwidth. One of my friends used an unlocked AT&T BlackJack II for a while with his T-Mobile SIM, and I'm pretty sure that he was able to using messaging functionality - I'll touch base and see what I can find.
Out of curiosity, do you have a data plan? You might consider creating/configuring two connections in Settings > Connections > GPRS. Take a look at the connections outlined near the top of the page at http://mazimi.wordpress.com/2007/06/14/s....
After adding these connections, make sure that T-Mobile has you setup for a messaging plan and give it another shot. I'd be surprised if T-Mobile turned down a request for additional monthly charges just to keep you from using an AT&T phone, so at the very least they should be able to add a texting/multimedia package and let you give it a try.
If you have the interest/time to complete the process above we'd definitely be interested to hear how things go!
Thanks again,
Jonathan

Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Good luck!

Jonathan,
Thanks for your response and I asked a wireless rep. who told me since this is an AT&T phone and I have T Mobile then that is the problem. Something to do with AT&T not allowing it or some reason like that.
If that's the problem, is that suppose to happen on all phones? because I had a Sony Ericsson and picture text messaging was fine.
