Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a new dell laptop. I have connected an external monitor to the laptop because the screen is bigger. The monitor has been working fine with my other computer that died. This monitor I have also used with another computer, so it works fine. The monitor is on, but says In Power Save Mode, Press any key on keyboard or move mouse. Nothing happens. Everything is plugged in correctly. I don't know what else to do. Can you help???

To activate the external VGA port on the portable Press the Fn key + the F8 key. This is a 3 setting toggle

1. LCD only
2. LCD & External
3. External only

You just press Fn+F8 again to cycle thru to the next setting

My Dell monitor is hooked up to my MacBook Pro so I can watch the DVD on the bigger screen ( the Dell ) however the screen lights up but the DVD will not show on the screen

Don't know much about Macs but with Windows based PC's the external connection to ta monitor will not display, unless you change a setting to tell the system to send the video to the external connection. Perhaps in the Mac there is a similar setting you need to change?

Need both laptop and monitor on at same time.

Hey Roger,
Below is information that should help you with trying to get monitor and notebook screen to work.
First make sure your laptop is equipped to be able to connect a secondary display, there should be a port for connecting a standard monitor cable on the back.
Connect your secondary monitor and reboot the laptop, the system bios should recognize that a second monitor has been added.
Then right click on your desktop and bring up the display properties dialog box.
Select "settings"
Your laptop should be identified as monitor 1 and you should also be able to see the secondary monitor as monitor 2.
Click on the secondary monitor and check the box that says "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor".
Set your screen resolution and color quality for the second monitor and click apply.
Directing icons and browser windows over to the other monitor is just a matter of drag and drop.

Thank You,

Laptop broken screen... plugged in Dell monitor, still doesnt work

You can switch to an external monitor or data projector by two methods. 1. Connect the external monitor to the laptop's video port, power up the external monitor first and the laptop. The video information will automatically switch to the external monitor. 2. If you power up the laptop first then you can switch the video output to the external monitor by pressing the Fn key and one of the Function keys, depending upon your make and model laptop. You can also toggle between the external monitor or both LCD screen plus the external monitor or back to LCD screen only by pressing the Fn key plus one of the function key. Here is a list of key combinations for some of the laptops :- IBM ThinkPad = Fn + F7 HP and Compaq = Fn + F4 Toshiba = Fn + F5 Dell = Fn + F8

Latitude B130 screen works great then cuts out to complete black, works with external monitor

Are you sure that the display is not set for external monitor only? Also take bright flashlight and shine on the display. If you can see the images then the problem is with the back light and usually caused by a bad inverter. Some times you can get the back light or inverter bu most times it is easier and cheaper to replace the entire display.

Usually the external monitor and laptop screen toggles in one of three states.
LCD only
External monitor only
Both LCD and external monitor
Wait a couple of seconds between when you press Fn F8

LCD video cable. Plus, to connect and activate an external monitor, you click Fn + F2, not F8.

Charging and monitor issues

If your AC Adapter and Power Cord is working fine, then your new battery has a problem if it will not charge. Just because it is new does not mean it will work.

As for your Monitor, try the steps below. Because it works with an external monitor, we know your Video Card is working fine, so the problem is either the LCD Inverter or the Lcd Screen itself is bad.

Shine a flashlight on the dark screen to see if you barely see the icons on the desktop. If so, then the LCD Inverter is bad.

If you see no icons by shinning a flash light and the external monitor works, then your screen is bad. If you see no icons by shinning the flash light and nothing shows on the external monitor, then most likely your video card is bad.

LCD dim.

If you have replaced the screen and the inverter, about the only thing left is the flexible cable from the monitor to the video card. I take it that the Fn+F8 makes no difference?
