Unless you have the special tools and expertise, you really can't. You have to take it to a professional, how old is your machine? Try calling Brother and maybe they will direct you to a warranty center that will give you a break. Good Luck

What is happening when I sew and 3 threads come out of the bobbin? Or when it just freezes up and I can't get the needle to go up or down?

basically the problem comes from incorrect thread tensions
the main thread responsible is the needle thread as the tension is far too loose
tighten up that tension and it makes the needle on the up stroke pull the thread around the bobbin carrier and collects the bobbin thread and pulls it up to the material
with the needle thread too loose the needle thread is wrapped around the bobbin carrier again giving you the 3 threads ( 2 needle threads and 1 bobbin thread and the tangle jams the bobbin movement

The top thread does not pull up the bobbin thread

Is the bobbin thread through the needle eye? If not then it needs to be there. The top thread doesn't pull it.

My 5 year old Huskystar 216 sewing machine is

Sounds like the hook/needle timing. To check do the following:

With the power off!!
remove bobbin and bobbin case.
push needle all the way to the left.
Turn handwheel toward you watching the needle and bobbin housing hook. The point of the hook should line up right above the eye of the needle.

If not timing, clean bobbin area removing lint and thread.
Check bobbin tension, should get slight resistance when pulling thread.
Make sure using only Husqvarna Viking bobbins -- most are green but they have new colors now. All will have the Husqvarna logo on them (an H). Make sure the bobbin is unwinding in the right direction.

Remove fabric. Pull extra long bobbin thread (about 3 inches). Hold upper thread tail in left hand, turn handwheel toward you for 1 revolution. Is the bobbin thread caught by the top thread and pulled through the opening of the needle plate?

If you are still unable to get a good stitch, take to an authorized Husqvarna Viking dealer for service or have them send to Husqvarna Viking (SVP) Technical Service Dept for repair. A list of dealers close to you can be found at the Husqvarna Viking website - http://www.husqvarnaviking.com/us

Good luck.

Bobbin?

DO NOT RESET THE TIMING!! The timing is off on maybe 1 in 100 modern Husqvarna machines. For the user to change the timing is turning a simple fix into a complicated and expensive fix.
If the top thread is "looping up on the bottom" then you have a problem with the tension on the top thread. Here is what to check:
1. Thread the machine all the way through the eye of the needle. Don't go under the foot.
2. Pull the tread to the side. While pulling, lower the presser foot. You should see the needle bend as the thread gets tight. If not, you have no tension on the top thread.
3. With the bobbin in the case, hold the needle thread and turn the handwheel to bring the thread up. Watch through the cover to see if the thread passes over the bobbin from left to right. When it gets to the right side, the take up lever should pull the slack out and the thread should be pulled up. If it comes part way across but does not pull up, make sure the thread is in the take up lever. If you never see the thread, remove the bobbin case and turn the hand wheel. You should be able to see the hook pass behind the needle while the eye is still below the level of the hook. If the eye is above the hook as it passes the needle from right to left, then and only then consider timing the machine. If the hook passes above the eye but doesn't catch the thread (bobbin case out, needle plate on, presser foot down) you probably have a problem with your needle. Put in a new needle and make sure that the flat side is to the back.
99% of the time when a Husqvarna is not picking up the bobbin thread, something simple has been overlooked. Your symptom of looping on the back of the fabric indicate either a threading or tension issue in most cases, not timing.
