my wjndows vista will not update, my modem router is the prob (Berkin) what can I do about it?

  • Clinton Hooper May 11, 2010

i'm assuming that windows has it's automatic updates enabled and you're receiving this message when it tries to update (or when you try to update manually).

this could indicate a problem with a firewall on your system or router. Are you running any third party firewall / security software? if so please tell the name and version.

    Thanks

If possible, please do more than just "disable" your firewall. stop it and close it out all together and try again.

worst case scenario. you can go to the link below and use the microsoft updater to get all of your updates. If completely turning off your firewall does not work i would recommend doing this at least once since it should give you the latest updates for your system and may potentially fix the problem without any further intervention on your part.

The microsoft updater is actually a good tool to use anyways since it will give you the latest updates to all of your microsoft programs.

hope this helps you out, and please don't forget to rate my solution.

If im missing a driver when i do the updates will it fix it?

Maybe, Windows Update does have some drivers; you will need to open the Windows Update control panel and check for optional updates. (Windows+X, select Control Panel. Go to System and Security, then select the link for Windows Update.) Check for updates (on the right) and then look at the list of Optional updates. Check the ones that you need.

Be careful: sometimes Windows Update provides the incorrect driver. If you need the drivers for a specific device, check with the manufacturer or post a comment with the manufacturer and model.

I hope this helps.

(Windows Update has successfully found the drivers for my older printer and scanner to go with Windows 8.1. Unfortunately, last week I had to hide an Network adapter driver by right-clicking on the update that was from an unknown company.)

Windows is more up to date than th one tryng to download,I need to cancel this but do not know how to find it

. First of all click the Start button to view the Start Menu. Then choose the Control Panel option.
2. The Control Panel window opens up now.
Click the System and Security link from the Control Panel window.
Important updates provide significant benefits, such as improved security and reliability. Recommended updates can address non-critical problems and help enhance your computing experience. Optional updates are not downloaded or installed automatically.

6. Important Updates can be configured in four ways:

  • Install updates automatically (recommended)
  • Download updates but let me choose whether to install them
  • Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them
  • Never check for updates (not recommended)
If you choose Install updates automatically , there are additional options to schedule the update at a convenient time.

3. The System and Security section of Control Panel opens up. Here you can see the Windows Update link.
As you can see in the above screenshot there is direct links to the important Windows Update option here it self in slightly small fonts, such as Turn automatic updating on or off, Check for updates, View install updates . You may choose the required option directly from here. But we are going ahead to the dedicated Windows Updates section of the Windows 7 control panel by clicking the main Windows update link.

4. So now we are at the Windows Update section of our Window 7 Control panel. You can manually look up for any new updates by clicking the Check for updates button under the heading Check for updates for your computer fromthis window. In order to modify the Windows update option click theChange settings in the left pane.
5. Here you may change the way Windows 7 download and install updates. Configurable option include Important Updates , Recommended updates ,Who can install updates and Featured update notifications .
or if Never check for updates is selected:

After it checks for updates, it will show you the important and optional updates.
  • Click on "...important updates".
  • Check all the important updates, believe me the computer needs it.
  • Then click the Optional TAB in the left column.

Hardware updates are shown in this OPTIONAL updates tab.
  • Check all, EXCEPT the Language Packs.
  • Click OK on the lower right corner of that window.
  • Then click on install updates.
I hope this will work for you.

Thank you for using FixYa and have a nice day.

How can i update my window 7 ultimate edition

Hello,

To ensure that Windows 7 is up to date, follow those steps.

  1. Click on 661e56d.png

  2. Select "All Programs"

  3. Click on "Windows Update"

The follow window will appear on your screen:

e1e8456.png

The Windows Update applet allows you to check whether updates are available for your system. In the picture above, there are no new updates available as is indicated by the white checkmark inside the green shield and the text next to it.

If new updates are available for your system, the shield will turn orange with a black exclamation point. You will be presented with the option of installing those new updates.

As you can see on the left side of the Windows Update, there is a menu of choices.

  • Check for updates - allows you to initiate the update process to see whether new updates are available

  • Change settings - choose settings that affect what Windows Update will do with new updates (download only, download and install, never check for updates)

  • View update history - view all installed updates and their status
Note that it is possible to uninstall an update in case it causes the system to become unstable.

If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask!

I have window 7 and I can not install my printer. It is telling me the system can not find the file specified.

Check your network status. The driver is found by Windows Update and the computer needs to be connected to the internet.

Windows Update also needs to be set to at least check for updates. Setting Windows Update to automatically install updates is the most convenient. Click on the Start button and in the Search Programs and Files box, enter change device installation. Click on Change Device Installation Settings. In the Window that opens. select Yes, do this automatically (recommended) if it isn't already selected. Click Save Changes. Restart the computer if it prompts you to do so.

If Windows Update is set to download but not install updates, go into Windows Update and look for an HP update in the list. Check for new updates if you do not see it.

I hope this helps.

Windows can't check for updates

"Can't" check for updates?

Windows update needs to be connected to the internet in order to check, so make sure you're online when running Windows Update.

If you're using Firefox as a browser, you'll also run into problems. You can open IE and go to updates.microsoft.com to run it manually.

If you don't have a legal version of Windows, the update usually won't run.
