Question about Arris SURFboard SBG900 (49402201900) Modem

2 Answers

Home Networking I recently purchased a Motorola Surfboard SBG900. Set it up with Comcast. The modem connects to a ethernet router for my two desktop macs and I also have a laptop. All is well with all computer accessing the internet. But I cannot get the laptop to network/connect to the desktop macs. Scanning does not find them. I must be missing a setting some where. How do I get these machines networked?

The router is a Vonage device. Motorola V22442-VD. So the set up is cable to Motorola Surfboard Wireless>Router>2 Desktops.
    Laptop accesses the Surfboard.

the laptop should have an IP address similar to your desktops for them to communicate. in looking up your devices I saw this:

    http://www.vonage.com/help.php?article=1...

copy and paste the above link into your address bar. you can then aquire the specific default gateway your laptop needs to connect to and receive an address via dhcp,if the router is set up to be a dhcp server.

Is the laptop an xp machine? If so:

In order to access shared files on a Windows XP computer (or any computer running Samba) from a Mac, the Mac will need to "connect" to the Windows XP computer and "mount" the shared files.

Instructions:

Start at the "Go" drop down menu at the top of your screen, then "Connect to server".
If the computer you wish to connect to is listed, just select it from the list.
If the computer is not listed, type into the "Server Address" field 'smb://' followed by the computer name or IP address of the computer to which you want to connect.
Click the "Connect" button in the bottom right corner of the window. See more at the link below:

I want to plug in another wireless router into my surfboard modem and have the wireless router work as well as the surfboard. Is there a way to do this successfully?

Yes this is possiable. First you need to unplug the power to the Motorola and the new router. Second connect the ethernet cable from the Motorola to the internet port on your second router. This port may be colored in yellow, marked as modem, or the ethernet port by its self. Third connect a ethernet cable from the new router to a desktop or laptop this is only to configure the new router. Next power on the Motorola and wait for the online light to become solid. Then plug in the power to the new router. Give the router about two minutes to obtain ip address from the motorola then try to get on the internet with the pc connected with the ethernet cable. Now you can run the new router setup cd on the wired pc to setup router. Once completed remove ethernet cable to the pc and connect to either network you have and you are good to go. Any questions just ask.

Ethernet Port failure new router

Check the socket in either the router or the PC. I had the same problem, only with my modem. When I inspected the port, the pins were misaligned, causing it to drop a connection. I corrected mine with a screwdriver, which is not ideal but it works.
