Thank you (my full question with all the details got lost :( ) but that setting *is* set to "sleep" both for battery and AC power.

I uninstalled the most recent installed application which was MS SQL Server 2008 express tools... this seems to have installed a bunch of other **** which was somehow interfering with the laptop going to sleep properly and causing it to abruptly restart.

Uninstalling sql server express 2008 tools seems to have done the trick. Thanks for your assistance.

I assume the laptop shuts down once you close the Lid of the Laptop. If so, please follow the following steps, applies to Windows vista and Windows 7.

Open the "Control Panel", double-click "Hardware and Sound", open "Power Options" and locate "When I close the lid", then change the options to "sleep" by clicking the availabe box. Screenshots below:

Windows 7

Apply and click "Ok" to save the changes.

If you have problem, let me know.

Good Luck.

No problem if what I have posted was the correct solution. Set "Sleep" both Battery" and "Ac Power". If the problem persists, restart your computer. You can also restore the settings bye clicking the "Restore Plan Defaults" tab (refer the third picture).

    Good Luck.

Dell vostro 3500 shows battery connected but not charging and intermittently shoes no battery detected

Determine if the laptop battery is defective. While less than 1 percent of batteries are defective, the possibility is still there. If the battery is new and only charges some of the way, it may just require a BIOS update to charge fully. New batteries that refuse to charge at all may be defective. Purchase a new laptop battery to replace the defective one.

Test the laptop power adapter to see if it's faulty. Run the laptop directly from the laptop power adapter and without the battery. If the laptop does not work with the adapter plugged in, the adapter is dead and you will need to replace it. The laptop battery may refuse to charge if the adapter is faulty. Charge the battery with the laptop turned off.

Insert the laptop battery into another laptop to test it. If the laptop battery charges in another laptop, the laptop's motherboard may be bad. Replacing a motherboard in a computer can be very expensive. If the cost to fix the computer is not worth the cost of replacing the motherboard, consider purchasing a new laptop.

Reinstall the battery to ensure all connectors latch properly. The latch mechanism that holds the laptop battery should click into place. If the latch does not close, remove the battery and examine the compartment for signs of damage.

Troubleshoot the BIOS to determine if there is a hardware problem. Turn on the laptop and immediately enter BIOS setup by holding down the "Del" and "F1" or "F2" keys, depending on the make and model of the laptop. When the BIOS screen appears, see how long it takes for the battery to charge down. If the battery does not last as long as the BIOS setup, a hardware failure may be the problem.

The problem is with copper connector connecting battery. Battery may be loose. Try putting duct tape from battery to laptop chassis. Hope this will fix the problem.

Water pilled in my dell vostro 3500 , i left it to dry for several days and till now it doesn't work , the screen is off even the power is on , and also fan on , light is fine to. what is the pro

The water is inside the machine on the motherboard and is causing a short, I recommend removing the main battery unplug the power supply open up laptop and lay it face down on a thick towel to assorb any moisture coming out from the keyboard, but I strongly suggest a pro take it apart for a cleaning provided the main board can be saved.

Dell Vostro 3500 suddenly shut down, start up and works fine, after 2 minutes turn off without any warning message this happened after i installed bios upgrade A10 from

this is happening because of bios upgrade but not in a bad way. May be there is a hardware problem just starting so new bios upgrade is detecting that and thats why its restarting.

basically sudden shut down occurs in either cases- Fan not working or hard disk(or RAM) gone bad.

my advise is to contact dell customer support and they will guide you thru trouble shooting steps.
they will guide you if your warranty is not there.

Dell Vostro 3500 suddenly shut down

Try going back to the previous version of the BIOS to see whether the problem continues. You can download older versions from the Dell website and install them over the existing version.

If this does resolve the issue, I would report the problem to Dell and as a precaution inspect the fan and the ventilation screens and ducts for debris and clean as required.
If you're good with a screw driver and the laptop is no longer under warranty, you might even consider taking the laptop apart to clean out any dust build-up from the ventilation ducts.
If this answer is any help at all, please rate either 3 or 4 thumbs. (1 or 2 thumbs are considered "horrible" and "bad")
Thank you for using FixYa and have a Happy New Year!
