I believe your reverse safety switch is shorting out when you shift it. Take off the cover where the shift lever is and remove the wire from the safety switch. If this cures the problem, replace the switch.

They do come off in the same direction. Spray penetrating oil or WD-40 liberally all over it and let it soak for a while, Get a pipe wrench (if you're already destroying the shoulders on the nut anyway) and work it close until the nut is a good halfway into the jaws. Make sure you have a good block of wood to keep the blade from spinning
and apply force. If you cannot get enough pull on the pipe wrench, find a section of pipe to make a "cheater bar" slipping it over the end of the handle and down a good 6 inches, and extend it out further. It will definitely come off.

check all of your known safety switches!
Clutch has to be pushed in
seat switch (sit on mower)
blade disengage switch
Finally check your starter soleniod between the battery and the starter and look for fuses and check them out in the process
