before i answer you question, do you have a microwave leak detector

Microwaves must be serviced by technicians due to the inherent dangers involved in repairing these appliances. Internal capacitors can retain a lethal electrical charge even though the unit is completely unplugged. A microwave radiation leakage test must be performed on the unit following any internal component repair.

Wave guide covers normally fix with one screw or plastic clip. They fit inside the cavity sometimes clip in and stop food particles contaminating the magnetron or aerial.

My microwave is making strange sounds and is emitting a burning smell. Can I see if it has been recalled? Model MCO160UW

It may be grease or food particles on or behind the waveguide cover / spatter shield that protects the magnetron and waveguide.
If you need a new waveguide cover, it can be ordered here:
If you have other questions, please contact me directly for full details since FIxYa doesn't always inform us of follow-up questions. Remind me of the full model number and FCC ID number from the tag and your detailed symptoms.

I believe I need a waveguide for the sharp r-8290a as listed on the left hand side of this page.

I believe you mean wave guide cover. Are you talking about a silver looking square or rectangle cover, typically held in place with 1-2 screws?? If so that is a wave guide cover. You must keep them clean and dry. Clean off any food splatter promptly and clean with a damp scrubby sponge. do not saturate. Try to keep dry. Sharp's distributor is a company called Encompass parts. you would need your model number.

There was a little explosion of sparks in my Hamilton Beach microwave, leaving a black residue on the waveguide cover and a chemical smell inside the oven. Oven still works. Is it safe to use?

not until you have it checked out in a repair shop.
using a microwave oven where it is possible that the microwave generated by the magnatron can escape to outside, means that any person in the vicinity of the unit can suffer radiation burns and /or get cancer if allowed to be exposed a simple check is all that is necessary

Our De Dietrich DME715X microwave oven is sparking from the ceiling - have tried a new wave guide cover but that did not work.

Some ovens have a tuning stub in the wave guide. If it has become loose or rusted, it could cause the problem. If that's the cause, you would have to transfer all of the oven's components to a new cavity. This is usually not done due to the cost, although I did do this once on an oven that was still under warranty.

Make sure the wave guide is clean inside.

Also check for rust near the wave guide cover. Re painting damaged areas might help.

Sparks fly, too, if the ovens contents do not contain enough water to absorb enough of the microwave energy. Leftover energy converts itself into electrical current in any conductive material (such as cavity panels).

My GE microwave is starting to arc, You can see the arcs on the plate (I believe it is the wave guide cover) on the right side interior. Burn marks are evident on teh plate. Is it the waveguide cover or...

Some units use a plastic or fiberglass cover over the wave guide where the microwaves are dumped into the oven cavity. If this cover gets coated with food/grease, or soaks up grease, it can arc, or catch fire. If unit is still operating properly otherwise, I would suggest replacing the cover. You need to inspect the wave guide, also, to make sure it is still intact, and there are no cracks in it that would allow microwave radiation to escape.

I have a GE Microwave Oven/Dual Element Browner Model # JES1288SHO3. The inside cabinet is arching through the wave guide panel. DAVE IN LA.

Hi Dave in LA,

The wave gude cover is replaceable, the part number is1085082. The reason for arcing through is typically a splatter of food stuck to the cover and then the heating waves overcooked or burned it. Carefully replace the cover (panel), look for any burned spots behind the cover, if the wave guide is burned through, the Microwave is unrepairable. If the waveguide has small arc spots you can carefully clean (sandpaper) and use touchup paint to recoat. I hope this helps and if it does, please let us know!

The wave guide cover in the Sunbeam SM0701A7E looks like a thin piece of cardboard that will just pop out of some slots. Is it meant to be removed? It's brand new and I want to make sure if it is to be...

Yes, it is wave guide cover and usually it transmit microwaves to the inner compartment. If it is borken from screws, you can replace it, if it is just pops out, you can put it back into three side slots and then, there will be a plastic screw, which can be inserted with hard pressing by your thumb/back of your screw driver.
hope it helps

The plastic is a wave guide cover. It will need replaced to keep splatter from getting in there. The arcing has left carbon deposits that must be cleaned and any bare metal repainted with microwave paint. It might be fixable but that depends on the extent of the damage. Eric

Clicking When Unit Starts

Q - When there is small amounts of food in the oven, arcing occurs right behind the plate where the wave guide comes into the oven. Sometimes it works well and sometimes you can't even put in a bag of popcorn. Any ideas? Could food have 'dripped' in here and be causing a microwave short?
A - Yes! Food splatter or drips can continue to cook and will carbon over creating sparks/arcs from the wave guide cover. Usually can clean up the food on and under the wave guide cover, if the oven liner has been damaged we usually lightly sand and touch up those marks with touch paint. Do not let it go for too long as damage to the magnetron end is possible as well :(   If the wave guide cover has been damaged, replace it!
