Hello, Have you or anyone done any work to the engine? The only timing is done with a key in the flywheel and the crankshaft. Your problem might be a stuck valve. You can check this by removing one sparkplug wire at a time and listen for the engine to change speeds. When you remove the one on the bad cylinder, it wont change speed. When you remove the other the mower will quit or almost quit. This tells you that the other one has a problem. The most likley problem is the intake valve. You can visually confirm this by removing the valve cover and you will see the valve in a lower position. The back firing from this condition usually is through the carburetor. Your air filter will sometimes be wet.

Hope this helped ypu to determine the problem.

Hello,
My name is Dane, and I'd like to help you with your problem.
I did some research and believe you have the Briggs 40CI engine. If not, disregard this complete post and repost with your correct model type and code.
I believe you will need to adjust the Valves on your engine. I don't understand why they would be so far out so soon, but that's the typical symtoms. Since it should still be under warranty, I suggest you take it back and allow a John Deere Service department adjust them.
If the warranty has already passed and you need to do it yourself, here is the way to do it.
1. Remove both valve covers and spark plugs.
2. The exhaust valve will have a steel push rod, and will be next to the exhaust port of the engine.
3. On the cylinder you are adjusting, turn the engine by hand untill you are on the compression stroke and place something long and thin inside the spark plug hole to rest on top of the piston. As you turn the engine to TOP DEAD CENTER, mark your probe you're using, where it comes out of the hole. Continue turning the engine until your probe drops 1/4 inch. That

That is where you will do the adjustment for that cylinder.

    4. Loosen the valve adjustment and using a feeler gauge, adjust the exhaust valve to .007 and the intake valve to .004 and retighten the adjuster to about 60 inch pounds.

    5. Do the other cylinder just like you did that one.

    6. replace the valve covers and spark plugs and you should be good to go.

    Thanks Dane

Why won't my Honda HRX217VLA lawn mower start

Hi Duane:
I'd be thinking that it's possible that the alignment key on the flywheel has sheared. That will throw the timing out and it can't run.
Fix is pretty straightforward.
Disconnect and remove pieces until you have the flywheel exposed. Loosen the nut. Lift on the flywheel and smack down on the nut with a plastic mallett to loosen the flywheel. Then remove the nut and flywheel. Replace the key (get replacement ant any lawnmower or chainsaw service shop)
Put it back together and it should run just fine.
Cheers.

1997 jeep Cherokee exhaust manifold glows red &starts running rough cuts off hard to start once warm took off cat still have problem thinking bad gas

Sounds like you have a timing issue(firing after TDC, bad, pushing still burning fuel mix out the exhaust), so grab a timing light and check to make sure the engine is firing at the correct time before TDC. Your Cat convertor shouldn't be a problem.

Its back firing and keeps cutting off cleaned the filter

Hi: Did you hit a rock or other solid object ,Some times if you hit a hard object it will Shear or partly move the Flywheel Key and throws the timing off which will cause kick back and back firing. If it is back firing through the carburetor it is probably flooding cause by a dirty or faulty fuel jet and seat, if so clean and check the jet in the carburetor. Hope I have helped you AL

High Revving Honda Lawnmower

When you put the carburetor back on did you get the linkage springs put back in the correct place? If you have a governor spring off or in the wrong place it will run fast. Running at an RPM higher than the recommended one can cause severe internal damage but shouldn't cause it to be hard to start. The hard start can also be from an incorrect linkage connection

Lawn mower fires but doesn't wanna run

You may have to inspect the woodruff key that is possibly worn out in the groove of the main shaft, To inspect this key way devise you need to remove the top off the mower probably 4 phillips screws off the plastic housing comes dont forget to pull out the oil stick, then removethe pull chord assembly in one piece 3 rivets need to be drilled out and reinstalled with new ones from Ace hardware when done, then remove the 3/4" nut...tap the shaft not to hard to loosen the flywheel and check to see that the keyway(woodruff pin) is worn out, go to a hardware store with the old one and buy a replacement reinstall everything and mower should be good to go.

My lawnmower won't start

Hi,
My first action would be to check for fire. Pull the spark plug wire and either snap an extra plug onto the wire, or pull the mower's plug and snap into the wire. Pull or try the key start, to see if the plug is firing.
If it's not firing, you'll have to look at other possibilities... eg kill switch or coil issues.
I hope this helps... Good luck!

Briggs and stratton quatum 5 hp lawn mower engine will not start, firing but keeps kicking back. pulls the starter cord right out of your hand.

Sounds like your ignition timing. If the blade hit something solid while cutting it might have bent the shaft or sheared flywheel shear key. This is not hard to replace, just remove the engine cover and flywheel. If its not that, it could be inside the engine and that would be a bigger job Stephen.
