Question about Kenmore 51lb. Clear Ice Maker

1 Answer

I have a Kenmore ice maker that makes a sucking sound while cycling. The water pan will not fill up all the way between cycles and my ice harvested is thin and cloudy. Do I have a pump problem? Can it be solved by removing it and thoroughly descaling it?

It sounds like your water supply line might be partially clogged probably at the water inlet valve in the bottom left front of the machine. I think there is a screen in there that you can clean out. The circulation pump will make a sloshy surging sound when not enough water is cycling through it as it pumps it up to the ice making sheet. You may need to replace the inlet valve itself. Pour extra water into the water reservoir in the interior of the machine and see if the pump runs smoothly thereafter.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.
Often the reason ice makers slow or stop ice production is because the freezer compartment has gradually warmed up above 17 Deg F and the ice maker thermostat will not start an ice harvest cycle. What causes this gradual warming is usually the result of either an evaporator fan running slow or an automatic defrost circuit problem caused by a fault defrost timer/control defrost heating element or defrost thermostat / thermistor.
You can use this manual to troubleshoot the ice maker:
http://applianceassistant.com/pdf/inDoorIceSystem.pdf
or
https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/8527f904cc8ea8cd85256b5800672333/$FILE/4322658A.pdf
Note that jumpering T to H requires the ice maker thermostat to sense a termp of 14 - 16 Deg F for the ice harvest cycle to start. If by jumpering T - H under the ice maker front cover the ice maker does not cycle then either the freezer compartment is too warm or the ice maker thermostat is bad.
If it cycles and does not add water... then the inlet water valve solenoid has failed or the ice maker module is not supplying power to the inlet water valve.

Water leak on back wall of my freezer and a hell of noise from my icemaker when on

Water leak and noise are due to wrong temp setting or malfunction of defrost cycking.Keep temp setting between 3 and 5 degree centigrade. Due to over frosting, the freezer fan fan hits over the ice and working to cool fridge compartment. And also check defrost timer, and heaterworking properly to defrost in time. And if your ice maker is making sound, due to:
  • You will hear a buzzing sound when the water valve opens to fill the water reservoir for each cycle.
  • Rattling noises may come from the flow of the refrigerant or water line. Items stored on top of the ice maker can also make noises.
  • The high-efficiency compressor may make a pulsating or high-pitched sound.
  • Water running over the evaporator plate may make a splashing sound.
  • Water running from the evaporator plate to the water reservoir may make a splashing sound.
  • As each cycle ends, you may hear a gurgling sound due to the refrigerant flowing in your ice maker.
  • You may hear air being forced over the condenser by the condenser fan.
  • During the harvest cycle, you may hear a "thud" when the ice sheet slides from the evaporator onto the cutter grid.
  • When you first start the ice maker, you may hear water running continuously. The ice maker is programmed to run a rinse cycle before it begins to make ice.
Hope, it's helpful>

My icemaker will get cold but wont make ice.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly

Here is what the manual says:

3. Icer-ette freezes but water does not come into mold; no ice production.
_____________________________________________________________

3A. Nonfunctioning water valve assembly. 3A. Clean or replace solenoid valve assembly.

3B. Mold heater assembly. 3B. Contact Raritan Technical Support.

3C. Water supply turned off. 3C. Provide pressurized water.

3D. Icemaker module. 3D. Replace icemaker module.

3E. Cold control. 3E. Replace cold control.
3F. Bad wiring harness plug contacts. 3F. Contact Raritan Technical Support.*

Although this is for troubleshooting non optical sensor refrigerators:

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=12&newsdesk_id=34
The troubleshooting procedures for cycling the unit are exactly the same,
The ice maker module part number for the 120V unit is PN 628366 (do a net search for this part number and save yourslef a bumch of money if you fetermine your moduleis bad) You start the harvest cycle by removing the front cover and then jumpering test points T to H. The white dial will begin to move if there is power to the module. Remove the jumper when the sweep arm reaches 5" o'clock and let the ice maker automatically cycle. It should harvest, and fill in on complete turn of the white dial. If it does not fill you probably have a water supply or water valve problem. There is an inline input power fuse for the ice maker. Power should come in via the red wire.

Mind you the ice maker has an internal thermostat behind the module assy that has to reach 15 deg F to start the harvest cycle. When you jumper T to H you are bypassing the thermostat. If the thermostat fails or the unit does not reach 15 deg F then the harvest cycle will never begin.

Kelly

Ice maker makes hollow ice cubes why?

That is what is commonly known in the biz as "Shelling". This is cause by low water pressure. Probably a clogged water filter or worn out water valve, kink in supply line. That sort of thing.
The water should fill for 7.5 seconds. If all of the above mentioned is good then the ice maker itself could have a problem between the copper plate mounted under the main drive wheel and the probe that makes contact with it at the end of the harvest cycle.

Need info on how to hook up ice maker lines

OK the ice maker is the boss. It calls for water. Nothing else in the ice box controls the ice maker water but the ice maker itself. How? Fancier models use capacitance of ice mold to correctly fill the ice mold. On board intel monitors the temp of the ice mold by sending power through it and checking for differences in capacitance in the mold. When it hits the sweet spot it monitors the temp till it temps inside the mold determine ice is there and kicks in the harvest cycle. Older styles simply put a measured amount of water into the ice mold at the end of each harvest cycle. You gotta first run a water line to the water valve and then run a line from the water valve up to the Ice Maker fill spout behind the ice box. Nothing to it.

Water =underneath= the refrigerator

Check you door gaskets for gaps or cracks that would allow air to get in the frig. Look for a bad water valve or ice maker head. If your ice maker is faulty it will instead of filling for 7 seconds it will fill the ice mold for 30 seconds. Put the arm up to stop ice production and wait awhile. Then lower the arm and observe the harvest cycle. The water valve should be energized for 7.5 seconds very near the end of harvest cycle. Just a GUESS

Make sure the curtain is not torn and there are no leaks from the resivoir. If ok check to make sure you have enough water pressure to the machine. Make sure you have enough water passing through the valve during harvest cycle. To check... turn the timer cam to harvest cycle. Water should come in quickly behind the curtain on the right side and the timer should advance three minutes to freeze portion of cycle and stop running. Water should spray and form ice for approximately 25min. Then the timer advances for 5 minutes into harvest cycle and it refills with water again.
