I recently replaced my hard drive in one laptop with another hard drive from my other laptop. I also exchanged the screens between the computers. I used the Windows XP operating disk to repair the oeprating system but that didn't solve the problem. I can access the drive in safe mode but I can't get to the internet. I lost the drivers for the wireness network adpater and you can't reinstall in safe mode.

Re: Computer wont load past the windows logo
Instead of doing a system repair, wipe the hard drive, reformat (NTFS), and reload the operating system. Then you will need to go to Dell's support site and download the drivers. You already know that you can't do installs from safe mode, only under normal operation, so, if the reload doesn't take, let me know the details as to why or what it's doing and I'll see if I can narrow the problem for you.

While the computer is powering on, tap the F8 key until you get a menu. Select Safe Mode w/networking and see if that allows you to log in. If yes then you will need to determine whether or not you updated a driver recently and roll it back. This is where I would start. If it doesn't boot into safe mode then you may be looking reinstalling Windows.
This sounds like a hard drive issue. Let the computer run for about five minutes and touch the bottom to see if the laptop is getting hot. If it is extremely hot, then a fan will need to be replaced. Overheating of laptops is the number one cause for hard drive failure. If the fan is replaced, then the hard drive might still be good.
Also, you may have had a virus, which is what is keeping you from booting into the Windows environment. You will need to reformat the computer but will loose all information if you do this yourself. If you are running Windows XP, you will need to purchase a restore disk from the manufacturer. If you are running Windows Vista or 7, boot the computer on and immediately (before the Compaq logo comes on) tap F8. Choose advanced options and choose to factory restore the computer. As mentioned, this will completely erase the hard drive and everything in it.
Hi. All Dell Notebooks has this Image Restore in one of the partitions of the hard drive.
You may restore factory settings of your computer but your files will be lost.
Try to boot using safemode with networking first so you can save your files online.
Turn your computer on and on the Dell logo, press Ctrl+F11 if system came with pre-loaded XP then follow the intructions.
If system came with windows Vista, on Dell logo, press F8 and select Repair your computer and press Enter. Click Next and/or enter your password if asked. If not, follow the intructions until your system goes back to factory image.
It is likely that the hard drive is bad or a memory issue. I would start by removing the hard drive and see if it goes past the compaq screen. If it does then you know what is wrong. If not message me and will walk you through the next step
There is nothing left to do for this one here. The best thing to do is to take your computer to the manufacturer for repairs. Other than that the best thing to do is to purchase an external optical drive / cdrom or dvd drive and purchase another windows xp disc and reinstall it. or if you have the windows cd for this computer that you could use that as well. Those are your best options.
try pressing f8 when you load vista and then select start normally if that doest not work and gives you the same error then restart and press F12 as soon as you see the dell logo, put in the vista installation disk that you got with the laptop and select boot with disk option.
try and repair or the recovery option .
NOTE : IT IS RECOMMENDED TO TAKE BACK UP OF YOUR FILES BEFORE USING THE RECOVERY OPTION .
