If the HDD crashed you would get an error saying that could not read or write to the hard disk, I believe. The blue screen can come up on older operating systems due to an error in logic.

Now's a good time to upgrade to windows 7 if you haven't already done so.

Maybe, try to boot from Windows 7 install or recovery disc.

If the HDD is bad, it should be able to be replaced by using a jeweler's screw driver and taking out the old and replacing with new. But, in that case, I would still recommend installing a new operating system from a 'full' install disc or 'recovery' disc.

You may have to change the BIOS settings to boot from the DVD-ROM drive.

Check out other information on your model laptop at the following address at sony.com:

Good luck on this repair.

Yes! the hard drive is the issue and must be replaced, go to www.sony.com for customer support and pricing. The second option is www.ebay.com type in laptop and click, type in your make model and click, next type hard drive and click, you will find the prices are cheaper. The final option is go to your computer repair store to see if you can buy one.

Laptop starts and after a while of using a blue error box falshes on the screen and turns off comp I can't even read the blue box its sooo quick!

That is called the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death).
try a chkdsk:

Chkdsk
Take the Windows XP disk. Boot from it, then DO NOT select F2 (automated system recovery) but continue through the procedure until you get to the point where you can choose between installing Windows XP and entering the Recovery Console. Once you get into the Recovery Console, do chkdsk and fix potential errors on your disks! Type Chkdsk C: /R at the prompt.

Or try a XP repair:

XP repair
When you boot with the Win XP install CD-ROM, it loads a minimal operating system, similar to DOS, but compatible with Win XP. At the first screen you select install Win XP (not Recovery Console) and at the next screen it will find that you already have Win XP and offer to attempt a repair. This repair should not touch your Applications or data; it just reinstalls the Windows files. This is great because when it works you don't need to reinstall all your software.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Error message when starting up: <Windowsroot>\system 32\hal.dll. Please reinstall a copy of the above file.

This issue happens if boot files are corrupted .. you need to have the Operating System Cd to resolve this problem . Considering you have windows xp you need to have the installation cd for windows xp .
you need to use bootcfg command to resolve the issue.

Go to bios and change the boot sequence to boot from the cd, if you are not able to boot from the cd. and then boot using windows xp cd .

Then push R to go to recovery console and use the below command

Boot to Recovery Console and rebuild the BOOT.INI file with the BOOTCFG /REBUILD
command.

Error code at startup

Re: windows Vista will not start I had the same problem and came across this solution that worked for me as well: 18 Aug 2009 07:28PM I was getting a the same error codes and couldn't get Windows to boot up at all. I went to BIOS set up (restart your computer and hit F12 when the BIOS screen comes up), went to onboard devices and changed the SATA Operations from ACHSI (don't know how it got there) to the factory default setting ATA. Then I started up in "repair mode" (which was an option that was coming up when I tried to boot up before but never worked) - it went through a repair check and went to login screen.
Prior to finding this - I tried several things including start up from the Reinstallation disc, but nothing worked. I was ready to buy a new hard drive, but don't have to. Works fine!
Not sure what caused the problem to start with. It is an "Inspiron 1520"

I get the message 'error loading operating system' everytime i start my computer, when i do start it it says to press DEL for setup, when i press this a blue screen appears and a passwod box appears in red...

The Setup option is for your BIOS , heres a link to resetting the BIOS password if you want to access it.

but as for the error loading operating system you will need any setup disks or recovery CD's that you got with your computer, preferably a Windows Installation CD , then you will have to insert the CD restart and let the computer boot from the CD and reinstall your operating system.
