Question about Computers & Internet

I THINK I have a G3 or G4? desktop, it's just over 3 years old. Had an extended warranty that covered my broken hard drive but then immediately after that, my screen began getting the vertical lines that only leaves me with about 5 inches of screen that is visible. I hear Apple is not fixing the problem. I would like to install an external monitor if possible. I have no idea what model my comp is because I cannot get to the part of the screen that has "about this mac" info. I can get a serial number off the bottom but that's it. A friend gave me an older Mac laptop that has an upgraded OS and was gonna use i,t but I hate to to not use my desktop which is fast and otherwise in good shape except for the screwed up screen...help? I am also NOT a computer geek which makes this more difficult...no offense...take it as a compliment...

You can find out model number info by submitting your serial number to Apple here.

Once you get info back you can get more info by googling the apple model ;)

Welcome to Fixya.

It is possible to connect an external monitor. Kindly post the serial number so I can look up for the specs.

Happy New Year!

You need a mini dvi to vga adapter or mini dvi to dvi adapter, whichever will work. Most of the monitors has both connectors (dvi or vga). You can get this adapter from the Apple Store for only $19.99.

By the way, based on the serial number, your machine is a 17" Imac 1.83 GHZ Intel Core Duo. It is a late 2006 model.

Power mac g5 shows terrible damage in tower from leaking they swear mom board is fine but its hard to believe. are any of the other parts usable for a g3 to g5 imac or g4 powermac or emac

None of the parts are usable in any other machine.
The coolant from a liquid-cooled G5 PowerMac is toxic. If your G5 is leaking, disconnect the power cord IMMEDIATELY. Flush any skin exposed to the fluid with water for at least 15 minutes.
If you want to glove up and extract your hard drive from the machine so as to save your data, do it carefully. Other than that, my recommendation is to bag up the unit and handle it responsibly as toxic waste, using the same guidelines your area uses for antifreeze.

I just purchased an old mac g4 and I would like to copy my desktop folder from my beige g3 desktop to the g4.

OK, put them on the same network (or connect them with an Ethernet cable), turn on File Sharing on both machines, connect from one machine to the other, which gets you access to the drive on the remove machine, and then drag and drop the contents of your Desktop across the link.

Will warrenty cover for tub ring deteration? The center ring of the tub that connect to the baskket is hard acylic and it broken. I purchase the machine in 2003. Is it suppose to be broken? Or is this...

I don't think this will be covered by warranty - unless you've been paying yearly.

I advise you to seek part replacement yourself online, purchase the correct part, and either fit it yourself or use a domestic appliance engineer.

''imac g4 does not see dvd drive after Xferring files and setting

when booting in os x after the first boot chime immediately hold down keys <apple, option,o,f> all at the same time and allow computer to boot to open firmware once there type "reset-nvram" exactly like that but without quotation marks and press enter once it returns to command prompt type "reset-all"and press enter (you must have the "-" in between the commands) the computer should restart if not when the command prompt returns type "reboot" and hit enter ..... also you can check the drive status by going to "system profiler" in apple drop down menu--->about this mac-->more info or applications folder-->utilities folder--->system profiler then selct disk burning under hardware in the list on the left

Lacie hd problem

This is a pretty old thread, but I just figured out the work-around for my Lacie drive with the same symptoms. I took the Lacie case apart to find a pretty standard 3.5" Seagate Barracuda drive inside the case. If you pull the actual hard drive out of the box, you can either purchase a new external hard drive adapter box ($30-80) or install it into a tower computer. I installed it into an older G3 tower and it mounted right up. I decided it wasn't worth investing in a six year old hard drive, so I will be purchasing a new drive and pulling the data off the old one.
