You should not need a driver for the monitor to work, as long as you are using Windows XP and above
as this OS will , or should work with all monitors.
In windows update, you will probebly get offered a driver for this monitor, which you can download and install if you wish

I'm guessing the different monitors are different sizes? The only thing a driver for a monitor will do will tell the computer the max resolution that the monitor will be able to go up to. However most 90% of monitors can use the built in windows driver without issues. Your best bet is going to be to change the resolution on the monitor. To do this you can either hook up the old monitor, lower the resolution, and then plug in the other monitor. Or you can boot the computer into VGA low resolution mode by pressing F8 as the computer starts up and selecting that option. From there you can lower the resolution, and then put it at something more desirable with the new monitor.
The other possibility being your Gateway monitor is actually malfunctioning and you just happened to hook up a bad monitor.

Bring up the monitor menu. There should be a button on the monitor itself. Find the signal input, change from analog to digital (DVI-D). That should take care of it.

I have a Compaq Presario laptop with a broken

Hi:
Just plugging in the monitor to your VGA port on the laptop won't make it display. You have to toggle to the exteral display, or both. Usually you have to hold down your function key, and then hit the external display key. It could be F1 thru F8, depending on your laptop model. Mine is F6. If you toggle thru the modes, your CRT should display . The missing pin is no concern!

How to connect my compaq presario V6000 to my dell monitor.

try hitting Function (FN key next to the control) and F7 at the same time on the laptop. Also, is the dell monitor's input set to VGA (some have multiple inputs like DVI, VGA, HDMI, etc)
