If you wiggle the power cord at the end plugged into the laptop, does the power LED blink, or the light stays solid?
Please answer this question before we could proceed with the diagnosis. I will pick up your answer & proceed with the diagnosis of the case with you.

Ok. Next question is: When you power up the laptop, do you hear any beep sounds?

  • Mohamed Omran Jan 01, 2011

Ok. When you power up the laptop, did you make sure that all external peripherals (e.g. USB memory stick, external hard drive, printer, web cam, ...etc) are disconnected from the laptop?

  • Mohamed Omran Jan 01, 2011

Ok. You mentioned that you don't see any HD light when you power up the laptop. The question is: Do you hear the sound of either the fan or the hard drive? I assume not, but would like to make sure before we move to next step.

  • Mohamed Omran Jan 01, 2011

Ok. Then to the next step: Did you try to boot up the laptop without the battery? If not, I suggest that you uninstall the battery, & try to power up the laptop using the power from the AC adapter only. Then please let me know what happens when you do this test.

  • Mohamed Omran Jan 01, 2011

Ok. With the battery removed, unplug the power cord from the laptop's power receptacle, then plug it again & watch while you are doing this if there is any spark at the power receptacle when you plug the power cord in? Listen & observe carefully if there is a spark at this moment.

  • Mohamed Omran Jan 01, 2011

Ok. Now we will need to disconnect internal drives (both the hard drive & CD/DVD drive) one at a time, then try to power up the laptop after removing each of them. If the problem still persists, then we will need to do the same with installed cards (the WiFi card, the modem card, even the memory modules if you have more than one). Try powering up the laptop each time a part is removed.
Please let me know of the outcome of this so that I could provide further recommendations if needed.

  • Mohamed Omran Jan 01, 2011

On the bottom side of the laptop's case, there should be one or two screws that needs to be unscrewed before you can snap the CD/DVD drive out of the case. These screws are usually about 15 cm from the rim of the CD/DVD drive.

  • Mohamed Omran Jan 01, 2011

Ok. May be this model has a different way to hold the CD/DVD drive in place. I need to double-check.
Can you skip this step & continue with the diagnosis, keeping the CD/DVD drive as the last part to remove from the system?

  • Mohamed Omran Jan 01, 2011

And the memory module(s). Have you tested the laptop with one memory module at a time? If you have only one module, have you tried to power up the laptop with this module removed & noticed if you get any beeps or if this changed the behavior of the laptop when it is powered up?

If none of these helped resolve the problem, then we are left with only one possibility: a faulty motherboard.

  • Mohamed Omran Jan 01, 2011

As the motherboard is already faulty, we won't lose anything if the flashing of the BIOS did not help.

As for whether it is worth replacing the motherboard or not, I need to know how old is this laptop? And what is its specs?
Does its specs match these: http://www.newtechnology.co.in/acer-aspi...

  • Mohamed Omran Jan 01, 2011

I don't think this laptop is worth replacing the motherboard. I checked on ebay.com & found this motherboard:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/Acer-Aspire-5532-553...

As you see, it is a used one. Yet, it is expensive (US$ 239). I think that your laptop after 1 year of use is worth almost the same amount of money if it is working.
Based upon this, I think you might better start with a new system. I would suggest a higher quality system if you can afford the price. Don't accept less than 2 years of warranty.
And as for your old laptop, may be you can sell it on e-bay.com for spare parts.

Try to connect an external monitor. That way, we can eliminate monitor screen problem first.

USB drivers out of date. Go to www.cnet.com and get the download for Drivermax (there's a free version) and install it on your computer. Then, run the program and it will tell you which drivers, on your computer, need updating. Drivermax gives you two 'freebie' driver updates per day, or you can pay to upgrade the app and get them downloaded all at once.
