Question about Aprilaire 350 Humidifier

1 Answer

My 2004 Aprilaire 350 is cycling on and off every second os so. I assume the water is actually cycling on and off. Kind of a hammering effect. I tied the humidistat wires together to check if it was that? No the problem continued. I 'm just guessing but could it be the solenoid? We have hard water here in the NE could this be causing the issue? I don't mind buying a part, I'd just like to get the one that will fix my problem Don

SOURCE: Solenoid won't open--voltage drops when connected to humidistat

The coil may shorting out the 24vac supply to the solenoid. Recommend replacing soleniod.
Normally you should be able to read the 24vac across the solenoid when energized.
The other option is to get a 120vac to 24vac transformer and test the solenoid. This way you will know if the solenoid is the cause or the 24vac source is the problem.

SOURCE: Water only runs with humidistat in test/reset mode

you need to make sure your humidity level in the house isnt higher then what your humidifier will provide at any givin outdoor temp. this chart is in the owners manual. you cant remove the wires going to the ODS or it will give an error unless you have a resistor to put in its place. Anyway if the humidifier works in test mode according to AA it works so you may have higher humidity than you think, the highest your gonna get is 45% as the temp outside drops it will allow less humidity so it doesnt cause window condinsation (property damage) here is a copy of the chart. the #s on the left are the dial setting

SOURCE: Aprilaire 600 problem

It sounds like you got it...

The solenoid will not open with only 13 volts to it. Jump or apply the full 24-27 volts to the solenoid and see if it clicks and opens and allows water to flow.

If the valve still won't open or pass water, start looking for a plugged inlet solenoid inlet screen or a faulty solenoid valve as well as a faulty humidistat.

About half the time the humidifier turns on and within 2 seconds turns off. Combine that with the very loud solenoid or water hammer, it's very annoying.

The water solenoid valve in your Aprilaire humidifier makes an audible sound anytime it opens and closes. This is normal operation. On occasion a mineral deposit may become lodged in the valve. When this occurs the valve may make a buzzing sound as the plunger is not seating properly. You may dislodge the deposit by lightly tapping the valve.

Aprilaire 550 clunks on shut off. Never did this before. Changed the saddle valve and Solenoid. Checked copper water line for possible vibration on a pipe, nothing. I'm stumped

Thank you for contacting us regarding the "clunk" sound you are experiencing with your Aprilaire 550. The noise you have described is called water hammer. Water hammer is a pressure surge or wave resulting when a fluid in motion is forced to stop or change direction suddenly. Water hammer occurs when the solenoid valve closes at the end of a humidification call. To prevent the sound of water hammer, we recommend contacting your heating & cooling contractor to install a "shock arrestor" part number 4280. This device is installed between the water pipe and the solenoid valve and will absorb the shock and stop the banging. Please contact your heating & cooling contractor or our Customer Service Department if you have further questions. Hello,All the pads have a protectant(white) coating because the pad is aluminum and would rot out fairly quickly from getting wet.The slime is bacteria(fungus) not from the coating that forms from stagnant (sitting) water.Make sure the unit is draining out dry after each cycle. With the pad out pour vinegar OR bleach & water (10:1) to kill the mold in the drain pipe.Do not clean the pad at all ,it gets replaced. They sell an inexpensive wet floor alarm at the store that makes noise when wet.

Aprilaire 560 constantly drains water

check to see if you have 24 volts between to 2 yellow wires coming out of the water solenoid. if you have 24v, then it is still getting energized to run. if it does not have 24v and the water is still running, the solenoid is stuck open. most likely from water deposits. sometimes you can take the solenoid apart and clean it, but probably better off just getting a new solenoid.

Lous noise in the furnace when aprilaire 700 on

I have had the same problem , off and on, on my two 700 units for over 4 years. It is caused by water hammer which results when a water solenoid valve closes quickly under pressure. Refer to your owners manual or get a copy of it off the internet. Note the areas where they tell you to remove and clean the inline water strainer and the inline orifice restrictor. These are VERY small components and can clog up easily so they need to be cleaned per the manual. While cleaning them won't totally eliminate the problem it has helped mine with the noise. You really need to have a qualified person, like a plumber, install a small, water hammer arrestor in the inlet line. The trick is to be sure it ends up parallel to the water line flow and not perpendicular to it.... a common mistake. If you are not qualified to work on solenoids and piping, don't do it......it will end up costing you more to repair your mistakes. Good luck

Aprilaire 400 - Mesh Screen not wet

Not happy either. I bought 3 Aprilaire 400 for my house (3 zones). I picked this style since I have attic installation and did not want to run drains. The first night I expected a major air quality improvement but no change in humidity. I have installed humidifiers before so I know the drastic improvement they make. So I watched for a season and still no humidity improvement. Absolutely nothing at all. Same exact observation as you all described. Only the bottom of the media was wet. I'm dissatisfied with Aprilaire 400. Do not buy! Since I installed humidifiers before and understand them I am converting the Aprilaire 400 to work like a Aprilaire 600. I simply unwired the float sensors, removed the floats/lid and using a knife cut some of the plastic cups so the water would drain well. I also cut open the plastic exit port some too so it wont clog from dust globs. I obviously added drains. HUGE RESULTS. On the very first cycle on the humidity in that zone went from 25 to 48. I am watching carefully. -GK
