Right click the Synaptics Pointing Device and select Pointing device properties OR double click the Synaptics Pointing Device. A Mouse Properties Dialogue is displayed, then select the Device Setting Tab and then select the synaptics device under device section then select the enable button and lasting select the the Apply button.

I had a similar problem just today. This is how I solved my problem:
- Went to mouse properties and saw that the synaptic pointing device was unabled.. so just enable it lol!

I had the same problem, The synaptics drivers would just dissapear. It was still under warranty, they replaced the entire palm rest assembly. Problem solved.

Navigate to Device Manager
Start >> right click computer >> Device manager
I believe for 7
If the device does not is missing completely, your touch pad needs to be replaced
If it does show up completely uninstall the driver, reboot and reinstall
