Question about Ace Hardware InSinkErator Badger 5, 1/2 HP Garbage Disposal

1 Answer

I have a spoon jammed between the teeth, I tried the allan wrench and it turns but does not free the spoon. I also tried the broom stick handle but no luck. Is there a way to release the teeth or loosen them so I can grab the spoon out? Help please...

The mouth of sink open is too small to get vice grips onto spoon.

There are 2 ways to proceed.
1) Put big screwdriver in crack to see if you can make opening wider so spoon comes out.
2) Remove disposal from below and then grab spoon with vice grips.
Instructions to remove:
-Loosen 2 nuts on p-trap, and take off p-trap.
-Don't move other tubular pipes. Any tubular pipe that moves will have to be disassembled and cleaned and reassembled.
i have a spoon jammed between the teeth, I tried - geno_3245_208.jpg
-Disposal is attached with steel ring. Rotate ring to remove.
-Disposal will drop down where you can work on it.

If spoon does not come loose, then buy same brand disposal and replace without replacing sink basket.

-Reattach disposal by lifting disposal into place with one hand and use other hand to set ring.
-Ring catches in 3 places. All three catches have to be in place.
-If disposal is too hard to hold while moving ring, then use bottle jack to lift disposal. Be sure to put board on bottom of disposal so jack doesn't punch a hole in disposal.

-Tubular pipe parts have to be cleaned. Rubber washers are generally replaced. Plastic washers are re-used. Tapered part of plastic washer goes away from nut.
-We use good slap of rectoseal on all tubular wai have a spoon jammed between the teeth, I tried - geno_3245_210.jpge they seal

Garbage Disposal Clogged or Jammed

If you are having problems with your garbage disposal, the chances are that it is either clogged or jammed. There are some things you can do to prevent these problems. Also you need to know what to do if this happens to you.

The first thing you need to be aware of the types of things that can cause your garbage disposal to jam.

1. Anything metal, like coins, can tabs, twisty ties
2. Plastic like bread bags, lunch baggies, etc…
3. Plastic bag ties
4. Large seeds, or pits, like peach seeds, cherries seeds. etc…
5. glass…say from a broken glass in the sink the gets it the disposal
6. Large amounts of food built up without running the disposal.

If the disposal jams you need to get it shut off quickly. If you do not get it shut off soon enough, it will “trip” the reset and you will have to manual push the reset button to get it to run again. The reset button is a red button usually near the bottom of the disposal motor. This button will pop out if it is tripped and you will have to push it back in to get the motor to work again.

A jam can be identified by a distinct “hum”. When this happens you will need to get the motor free before turning it back on again. Just turning it on and off without working the plate back and forth till it is free will only cause damage to your disposal. To get the plate free, some disposals have a place to insert a ¼” allen wrench that is usually provided with the disposal. The slot for the allen wrench is in the bottom of the disposal motor. By inserting this wrench and rocking the motor back and forth the plate can be worked free and the motor will turn freely again. However, before turning on the disposal again, make sure to find the cause of the jam and remove it or it will just jam again.

If your disposal does not have a slot for an allen wrench, you can use a piece of wood like a hammer handle or a broom stick to reach in a turn the plate from the top. This is much more difficult, but does work with some effort.

Once the disposal plate is free and rotating easily, run a full stream of water and turn on the disposal to clean it out.

Use a broom handle to turn the blades or use a wrench in the bottom of the unit. The wrench should have come with the disposal.

My kenmore disposal doesnt work it only hums

It is jammed the way to fix it is to use wooden broom stick and place the handle side in disposal and let it engage on the side pull stick back and forth till you free up the cutting blades. Then test it to see if it works. This happens a lot with disposals.

Stuck flywheel, disposal will not run, humminf noise Model: GFC525F GE

something is stuck in it, the humming is letting you know that its stuck. assuming you dont have a disposal turning wrench try this. unplug the unit under the sink. using an old wooden broom handle,, place it inside the disposal , and try and turn the unit. once you free it up, use a flashlight to look inside and remove whatever is jamming it up. once this is done, plug it back in and try it again. if the humming has stopped and it doesn't turn on. at the bottom of the unit is a reset switch. push it in, and try it again ( turn off the power as you rest it)

My garbage disposal jammed, (Badger. 5) I noticed this when I turned on the until and just heard a hum but nothing spinning. I shut off the unit and got out my allen wrench and inserted in the bottom and...

Just put a wooden broom stick into garbage disposal.
Wedge the broomstick against the cutter disk.
And push or pull broom stick against sink opening so it frees the cutter disk.

My badger 1 1/3 hp garbage disposal is stuck how do I fix it and do I have to detach it from sink before I can fix it?

Turn off the power to the unit. You can try to free the jam without removing the unit from the sink. Check to see if there is a hex-shaped hole underneath the center of the unit. Use a hex wrench (usually one is provided with the unit) to turn it and free the jam. If there is no such hole insert a short section of broom stick into the opening and try to loosen the jam by pressing the stick against the cutters at the bottom and turning both ways. Be careful not to twist the unit out of its mounting.

I pressed the red reset button at the bottom of my disposal and nothing happened. Was I suppose to push it with the unit plugged in wall. It hums but doesn't move

It is stuck. It should have come with an "allan wrench" which is used to free it. It fits directly in the bottom of the disposal, and you turn it clockwise and counter until it frees. If you do not have an allan wrench, a broomstick may work. Put the handle in the garbage disposal (from top - in the sink) and try to jar it loose. You have to catch one of the teeth though. After that is done, hit the reset and you should be all set. Good luck

Humms but blades don't move. the blades move freely. the reset button did not fix it. thank you.

Try placing the allen wrench into the socket on the underside of the disposer and working it back and forth, then trying it electrically. The blades can appear to be free, even with a jam. The moving of the inner workings with the allen wrench should free it all up. Flush the disposer with a potful of ice and water when it turns freely.
Best regards, --W/D--
