If you have sound turned on, one of the first things that happen is the computer will make a boot chime. Does this happen? If so, this problem is likely just the display (and we can troubleshoot further).

Let me know if that happens.

Do you hear the start up chime as normal? What were you last doing before this problem happened?

Look closely at the screen. You might have to change the lighting or shine a powerful light from the back of the screen, through the Apple logo. If you see a dim image, your problem is either with a bad "inverter" board, a bad "CCFL" light (the bulb that lights the screen), or with the logicboard itself. check back for more info if this is happening.

Reset button on a powerbook g4

The Powerbook G4 power button functions like a reset button if you hold the power button in for a few seconds until the computer powers down.
  1. Hold the power button in for a few seconds (until you see the screen turn off/go black and hear the fans & hard drive stop spinning).
  2. Press the power button again to turn your computer on.
  3. If you have more trouble, you may need to boot in Safe Mode or "perform a Safe Boot":
Press and hold down the "Shift" key immediately after you hear the start-up tone. Release the "Shift" key when the gray Apple icon appears on the screen.

This is door to a poor backlight meaning the backlight needs to be changed out. Going to cost like $125 for the part if you do not know how to do it then a tech will need to get involved so tack on your labor. I hope this helps as it did dozens of people with the same issue. please do leave ratings and feedback for your free answer today.

Another waterlogged 12" PowerBook story

Sounds like you have done all you can. The hard drive should be ok and still work in an external case so you can transfer the data to a new machine. Good luck!

How do i back up a power book g4? What application do I need to do the back up?

Suchisart,
If you want a stand alone backup solution, you can download a free program called "Carbon Copy Cloner" and purchase a USB 2.0 external hard drive. You can use the CCC software to backup the entire contents of your Powerbook's hard drive or just selected files to the external USB hard drive.

If your Powerbook is unable to boot into OS X and you need to recover the files that are on the internal hard drive, you can boot the Powerbook into "Target Disk Mode" and transfer the files via firewire cable to another Mac. To do this do the following.
  1. With both Macs off connect them with a firewire cable.
  2. Turn on the Powerbook and hold down the "T" during startup.
  3. Once the large icon shows up on screen your in "TDM".
  4. Turn on the other Mac and login to your account.
  5. The Powerbook's hard drive should mount on your desktop.
  6. You'll be able to transfer your files from the Powerbook's hard drive just like you would an external hard drive, thumb drive, etc.

Don't forget to vote and leave us some feedback. :)

How to save data from hard drive off my apple power book g4

You can drag and drop your files on to an external hard drive or USB flash drive, burn the files to CD/DVD using an application called toast - you will need a CD/DVD writer to do that. If you can find one, you can save your files to a zip disk.

IBook G4 will not come on

You should be able to sucessfully boot from the original installation CD. If not, there is another problem with the computer. The iBook G4's are known to have logic board problems, which could very well be causing this problem. The logic board problem is very costly to fix. Over $300. There are solutions that you can do yourself online. I did this on my iBook and it continued working. Let me know and I'll send you a link to repair this yourself.

Powerbook g4 15 not turning on

Something is wrong with the operating system. If there is a flashing folder with a question mark, then it might be with the hard drive as well. If you just get that warning, then you may only have to reinstall your operating system (OS X). Get your CD/DVDs out and insert the OS X disk. Hold down C when you start the computer so it will start from the disk and not from the hard drive. After the startup program has loaded, you can try to check the hard drive and repair permissions and such to see if that works, or you can just reinstall the OS. Good luck.

80 gb hard drive from apple pro book does not work

Try using Disk Utility to mount the drive. This can be found in the Utilities folder within the main applications folder. Launch Disk utility and see if the drive comes up in the list of drives down the left hand side. I presume that the hard drive in the enclosure is spinning. You can normally hear it, and feel a constant light vibration.
