SOURCE: Nested Problem?
Marty, sounds like the refrigerator is not going in defrost cycle. There could be several factors causing the ice buildup. Symptoms of this are higher freezer and cold food temps If you could look around the door panel for a model number, Example:106.48062890 I may be able to help you solve the problem.
Causes could be defrost timer, defrost element, element wiring connections, etc. Let me know , Thanks, Sea Breeze

If there is a lot of water dripping and I guess there is since you had to turn the water off, you need to replace the dual solenoid valve to cure your problem. You did not post your model number so it is not possible for me to say if you have more than one valve assembly in your refrigerator. If you have 2 separate valve assemblies you will need to disconnect the lines one at a time to locate the correct valve to replace. I hope this helped you.

When you first hook water up to the refrigerator you have to fill a tank in the fridge. Open the water supply behind the ref. turn the control on the front of the ref to water and hold a glass under the spout as if you are filling a glass . You may have to wait 3-4 minutes forthe tank and lines to fill with water before you get any to come out into the glass. The water my be discolored at first so run a few glass full through before drinking . hope this helps

It would not hurt the motor as they are built to be exposed to some degree of moisture if the defrost does not work i would check and see if something is jamming the actual mech. up. In my ice dispenser i had stuff fall in from the shelf's and seized up the motor. Any how if the thaw does not work check out a motor at repairclinic.com (http://www.repairclinic.com/SSPartDetail.aspx?s=t-106.53769202-%3d%3dc203i1057785&PartID=1057785)
