I would contact Microsoft, explain the circumstances to them and emphasise your daughters condition. If they are sympathetic to your case (and they should be), they will probably be inclined to send you out a copy of Windows 7 if you can prove that you have a legitimate serial code for this.
My advice is also not to be put off by the first person you speak to, ask to go higher up the "food chain" until you get a response. I think you have anough to contend with without having these issues to deal with
