Check the Speaker Connections and Volume Control Settings
1 Verify that the lack of sound is not due to faulty speaker connections. A simple way to test it is to substitute the speaker connection with headphones and see if you get any sound. 2 Open the volume control window by clicking your "Start" button and then "All Programs." Click "Accessories," then "Entertainment," then "Volume Control." Alternatively, just click on the speaker icon that's in your System Tray. 3 Check the volume and mute settings. If any of the mute check boxes have been checked, uncheck them. If this doesn't work, read on.
Perform a System Restore If Necessary
1 If the sound has been audible from your computer's speakers and is suddenly lost, you may need to perform a System Restore. Click on the " Start" button and then "All Programs." 2 Click on "Accessories," then "System Tools," then "System Restore." 3 Complete the System Restore Wizard. If this doesn't work, read on.
Delete and Reinstall the Original Sound Drivers
1 Deleting and reinstalling your sound driver may resolve the problem. Your sound driver may have been corrupted or may be missing. The result of this is that the restore utility menu won't be available. For Windows XP, follow these steps. 2 Click on your "Start" button. Click on "Control Panel" and then "System." Next, click on "Hardware," then "Device Manager, then "Sound, Video and Game Controllers." 3 Click on a sound device named in the Device Manager, and then press the Delete key on the keyboard. Click "OK" in the window that appears. Remove all the listed sound devices i this way EXCEPT Audio Codec and Legacy Audio Drivers. 4 Restart your computer. Reinstall the deleted drivers using the Driver and Application Recovery CDs that came with your Windows XP system.

How can I make the audio in my Finding Nemo PC game stop sounding like chipmunks on my Windows XP desktop machine?

Try taking the audio out, (via the headphone socket or dedicated audio output socket), to a separate amplifier and speaker set. It will sound a great deal better. If it does not sound better and other games / audio CD's sound OK, then the audio track on the PC game is corrupted. Cheers

I cant figure out what sound drivers to install on my PC. I tried my fail safe realtek audio codec but its not working. Please help!

Is your machine Dell based running Windows? If so I have some bad news. Dell and Microsoft have been having an issue with updates.

Sometimes a windows update will kill Dell's sound drivers. Dell says it's a Windows issue, Microsoft says its a Dell issue, and no one wants to spend the time to fix it. This is a slamdunk for the sound drivers, no recovery short of wiping reformating and reinstalling your op system, and even then, no guarantee you will ever have sound again.

If you are NOT on a dell based machine, then you should be able to get info on your audio devices via the device manager, go to the manufacturer site and get the updated drivers.

Don't know how to get sound to work after reformatting

Hi kra02,
In order to get your sound to work again you will need to download and install your audio driver on the machine again.
You mentioned that you have a Compaq, you can go online to the Compaq website to get your Audio driver and probably the other drivers for your machine since you reformatted then you need to install all drivers needed for your Compaq.
Check in device manager under control panel to see which drivers needs to be installed, then you can download from the Compaq site to have your machine running fine again.
Drivers that you probably will need to download is the Chipset Driver, Video Driver, Audio Driver, LAN or Ethernet Driver, these are drivers that are most important.
I hope this help.
Have a nice day,

No audio devices installed cant play audio files

First check if a windows machine by going to start/control panel/sound and audio devices and see if a sound card is listed. Check the setting under hardware and audio. You need two essentials to play audio files. You need a sound card and the software to play audio files. Most desktop computers come with some type of sound card but you can buy one from a local "Best Buys", "Walmart" online or computer store. They are relatively inexpensive and can be installed as a DIY in an open PCI slot inside the back of your machine or take it to a computer store. Windows Media Player comes with Windows and Apple's Quick time with Macs so that should take care of the player end of things. Hope this helps out. Give me some feedback if it does. Thanks

When the sound suddenly goes out, it's usually a driver glitch. Drivers are the programs that allow certain devices to work, ie... sound card. The sound card is built into the machine, so the driver is all you need for it to work, unless the sound card has malfunctioned, and that is rare. Since the drivers were already in the machine you do not need to download them again. You will simply need to uninstall the audio drivers from the device manager, then restart the machine. The machine will find the sound card and reinstall the audio drivers automatically. you can get to the device manager by right clicking on "my computer", click on properties, then the properties box will appear. Open the hardware tab at the top, then click on the device manager button, and the device manager will open giving you a list of all devices. You want to open and uninstall everything listed as audio. If you need any further assistance, just ask.

No soundfrom speakers-{usb]

1.)Try connecting your speakers to another machine ? Then you can distinguish if the speaks or the cable is faulty or your sound software on your machine.

2.)install the l8est drivers for your sound card or audio device

3.)try the front usb, sides or other usb ports

4.) If your speakers also have "Jack" connectors, either try plugging into another audio port at the back of your machine or try the front audio ports

5.) Are the speakers powered on ? Is the volume on the speakers muted OR is the sound in your system on your machine muted or turned off or turned quiet ???
