Sounds like the flame proving rod. It is located in the burner compartment and sits right in front of one of the burners. Its the L shaped bar not the ignitor which glows. Sometimes all it takes is taking it out and gently cleaning it with sand paper or something similar. If it still doesn't stay lit after that, it might need replaced. Hope this helps!

I bought a brand new house and the gas water heater seems to be stuck in vacation mode.

Copy following link to troubleshoot by type of gas control valve, instructions how-to-light-water-heater, including error codes etc:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-gas-water-heater.html#intellivent
To reset the intellivent gas control, press and hold both arrow buttons for about 5 seconds
This water heater requires pilot flame. Look through site glass and upward (or use mirror) to see if pilot is ON and burning clear blue flame and not lazy yellow flame.
Check that gas shut-off is parallel to gas line:
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/Gas-water-heater-89-valve-2.jpg
Check if outlet has 120Volt, and that polarity of outlet is correct. Power vent water heaters require correct polarity: use circuit analyzer. Check if there is ground continuity between ground and manifold tube (center tube that connects between burner and gas control valve).
Scroll to top of same link to read about FV system and air intake cleaning. Must have good supply of incoming air.
Same page half way down has troubleshoot section for pressure switch testing, blower troubleshoot etc. The pressure switch and blower communicate electrically with gas control thermostat to determine when to release gas to burner where pilot ignites gas, causing poisonous combustion by-product to vent outdoors and help nature.
This model has thermopile instead of thermocouple. Basically thermopile is several thermocouples. When heated, thermopile generates enough current to run small electronic circuit inside gas control valve. This circuitry is very common in hvac units but fairly recent to water heaters. Advantage is error code troubleshoot and more optional controls, for example future response to in-home zwave remote controls and home automation
Get model number and brand from label on side of tank and post question on pro water heater forum with list of what you have tried so far.

Call plumber to bleed air out of gas line and check gas pressure.

My gas water heater pilot light will not stay lit

Hi Mike,
1stly you have to understand what the pilot light does!
Yes, it lights the flame, but it protects you from gassing yourself!
that is thye main job!
hava a look inside!
In front of the pilot flame, (it might have a double flame... (one flame on the bottom & another on top.) is a curved piece of metal plate. The flame is supposed to heat that plate untill it it very hot! Thenm the plate bends down as it is a bimetyaalivc strip!
This opens the bsaety valve & you can let go.
The flame will noe stay on. If a gush of wind blows the flame out, the strip will cool & the safety valve close, preventing a dead family in the morning.
There is a newer system as well.
Right in front of the flame, is a pointed sensor with it's tip in the flame. . It has a electric cable running to a safety valve. This sensor have to heat up as well. It is a heat battery that activates the valve. See that it did not move!
If it heats up, & the valve does not keep the pilot flame going after a few seconds, the unit has to be replaced!
Safety first!
Andy

More than likely, the interior of the unit needs to be cleaned. When it's in operation, it sucks dust and link into the fan and heater elements. When it's not, spiders love to go into and build nests. If badly clogged, it can cause the heating element to over heat and shut off. Carefully, removing the back panel of the stove will give you access to just about everything. As far as the flame is concerned, the bulbs may need replacing. Although, it's unusual for all of them to go bad at one time. You or your nephew can replace them after the unit is cleaned. A vacuum that has a hose, brush attachment and crevice tool, will work well in the cleaning of the interior. Be sure to turn the Master ON/Off Switch to OFF & Unplug the unit, before attempting and maintenance on it.

If after performing all of the above, the unit still doesn't work properly, contact Dimplex USA, Technical Service 888-346-7539, for further advice.

Hope this helps to solve your problem. Please let me know.

does the unit actually fire just not stay lite... if so then the flame sensor is the culprit..sometimes you can pull it out and lightly sand it don't go crazy because to much sanding can really cause problems... if the unit does not light then what is the sequence it goes through before failing... this unit have a hot surface ignitor i am assumming (glow plug some call it) or is it spark ignition with a module box on it... either way the sequence of operation should be a call from the thermostat made for heat, the enducer draft motor comes on (small motor with a wheel on it) then the enducer draft motor pulls a negative pressure on the pressure switch (round switch with hose attached to it) make sure hose is not kinked or broken, also pull off and check for debri in hose and in holes where it connects to... after pressure switch closes it will send power to ignitor /or spark module once glowing the gas valve should open and allow gas to enter burner orfices and fire ... once unit has lighted then the flame sensor continues to measure milivolt and send bacl to board to keep gas valve open while call for heat... if the flame sensor is dirty or faulty it will not allow the gas valve to stay open. repost with more info ///watch unit where does it fail... most goodman units have a code schematic on the door of unit or inside... should tell you what the number of flashes means if it still is there let it fail and count the number of flashes and then see what code is for that failure.... good luck to you

Cannot get pilot to ignite. have repeated steps as instucted with no help

possible you have a bad thermocoupler this is the rod that is next to where you are trying to lite...it senses flame and after getting hot will send current back to gas valve to keep pilot lite. home depot sells thermocouplers very cheap in water heater department it will work for your heating unit also....

It sounds to me like you tried about everything I would. So I think you're already thinking about what I would do next. Try the flame sensor, and as last resort check all connection . Remove wires one by one clean and reattach. If all else fails change cotrol board. It's very hard to fix when it's not consistent. Good luck. Thanks

I can't get my pilot light turned on. I have a Rheem powervent water heater and I can't turn it on. I keep getting an error message that says "FVD interface failure/miswiring". What do I have to do to...

Hello,
Most likely your flame sensor wiring is partially burn't or has an open circuit fault that's giving you the error message. This wire starts at the gas control and ends next to the pilot assembly. It can easily be replaced using a small wrench to unscrew the end connector from the control and the flame sensor rod at the pilot assembly. Call Rheem and see if the water heater is still under warranty, but even if it isn't they can most likely order the part you need for you. The phone # is on one of the data decals on the side of the water heater tank. They will need the model # and serial # to order the part. Be sure you unplug the unit before working on it! Douglas

How do i use the reset button to turn the hot water to star heating again?

turn the dial to pilot and push and hold down red button while you light the pilot located inside water heater beside burner, keep holding button down after pilot is lit for about 1 minute. If you let go and pilot goes out repeat above steps and make sure pilot flame is heating up the thermal couple. If that fails replace themal couple.
