I just had the same problem with my refrigerator. I called a repairman out, and it ended up being dirty coils. He cleaned them and my refrigerator is working great. It's 13 years old.

Why on my model FRS6LR5EW3 freezer side is working maintains ice but fresh food side is not working, no light, no fan??

Good Morning Friend,

I understand the freezer portion is working on your Frigidaire refrigerator, model# FRS6LR5EW3, but your refrigerator does not seem to be as cool as it should, due to the fan not working. I also see that the light is not working, even after changing it out. Please try resetting your appliance, by either unplugging it or shutting the power off at your home's circuit breaker, for 3-5 minutes. Restore power and see if the light is on. Also, listen for the fan to run and give the refrigerator portion of your appliance 24 hours to stabilize at the set temperatures. I ask that you please follow up with a comment on the post, at your convenience, to advise if further troubleshooting is needed or if your appliances status has changed successfully. Hope this is helpful.

-Best Regards-

I have a kenmore side by side refrigerator freezer. It's about 15 years old. Recently the freezer has started making a loud humming noise. HELP

Good day,
The most common reason for noise is the fan motor in the freezer compartment.
Remove the screws from the rear panel in the freezer compartment and inspect the fan motor. Replacing it is a fairly easy nuts and bolts procedure. The motor should be available at most appliance parts houses.
kenmore is a trade name for Sears appliances. It was made by either Whirlpool or Frigidaire.

My Frigidaire upright freezer is only 4 years old & isn't working

freezers have safety devices to protect themselves. The compressor has an internal overload to keep it from overheating. some have external reset buttons and some do not. either way the cause must be corrected. if the freezer was low on refrigerant you would see signs of oil near the coils, tubing, or compressor. If there is no leak, it overheats when there is airflow restrictions(dirty coils) or a fan has stopped working. only a few screws keep you from seeing all there is to see. If it is clean and the fan is running, then the compressor may just be the culprit

Check your compressor relay- http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/check/compressorrelay.php

. Cut everything off for a few minutes then turn it back on and listen for a click from the compressor relay as the compressor tries to start.
Is the compressor motor running. If no check starter/overload relay.

How to check everything
http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php
If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Your evaporator coils frost up in normal use and every eight hours or so the entire unit shuts down and the defrost heater comes on to melt the frost. This cycle last about 20 minutes. The melted frost drips into a drain pan and through a drain tube to the drain tray under the freezer/refrigerator where it's evaporated by the condenser fan.

Is the evaporator fan in the freezer running. It blows cold air into the fridge side through a damper in the wall between the freezer and fridge. Make sure the damper is open.

Below the evaporator fan is the evaporator coils. Remove the back cover inside the freezer to observe the frost pattern. Light frost everywhere(NORMAL) or a partial pattern of ice(LOW ON FREON) or nothing(LOW FREON OR COMPRESSOR PROBLEM).

Refrigerator stopped cooling

The most common problems for refers not cooling is a condenser fan motor (the one that cools the compressor) is out. This can be caused by either a mouse has tried to jump trough the fan and it came on or a loss of grease or oil. There is no way to oil them so they have to be replaced. That is the problem especially if you unplugged the refer and it worked for a while then quit. If the fan doesn't cool the compressor it will overheat and shut down coming on intermittently then shutting off again. As for the refer that still doesn't cool when everything else does you may have an burnt overload also. Check the compressor area for burnt or stalled components ex. fan motor, relay, overload. If your compressor is out plan on spending from $300.00 to $500.00. But check the suggested components first. And beware there are appliance shops out there that will find one of these problems and give you an estimate for a compressor. Find someone reputable.
