Thank you for posting your question here on

It could be the pump is bound up but it is more likely the motor is failing. It may be a small part such as the capacitor or the starting switch, but could also be more severe such as the winding itself. You will also want to examine the shaft where it passes thru the pump and motor and look for signs of rust from a pump seal leak.

If you are not familiar with testing these parts your best bet would be a local electric motor repair shop to see if the motor can be repaired or if it would need to be replaced. They should also be able to ensure there is no pump damage. If you wish to continue to try to repair it yourself please comment with any questions you have as you work thru the pump and motor.

If this answer does not fix your problem, please comment with additional details or contact me thru our site at prior to rating the answer; I'll do what I can to help. Positive feedback is appreciated once your problem is solved!

When it is 20 degrees or less my heetpump outside unit hums high & low pulses is this normal, temp. is fine.

Heat pumps don't work when the temperature is at 20F. They run the best at about 40-50F. At 20F, the compressor doesn't come on and it switches to electric resistance heating. So you pay full price for your heat when it is that cold. The hum you hear is caused by the temperature sensor deciding whether to run the compressor or run the resistance heat. Twenty F is pretty much the cut off point where the heat pump loses it's fabled 300% efficiency (which actually happens at around 50F) At 20F the heat pump is very close to 100% efficient , so it makes no sense to get the wear and tear on the mechanics of the unit, so it switches to resistance heat which is also at 100% efficiency with no moving parts.

Heat pump compressor wont come on in heat mode, works fine in cool mode, we get heat occaisionally for about 2 min, then the compressor shuts off. it is a fridgedaire window unit.

Try setting the thermostat at a normal heat setting. By raising the temperature too high the unit thinks that the heat pump won't be effective and go into strip heat mode.

Makes a humming noise wont heat

If its making a humming noise, that means the diode is bad and should be replaced. Once replaced the microwave will begin to heat again.

Pump just hums but wont start

Sounds like its frozen and causing a very heavy load on your circuit. If the motor gets hot within seconds, its shot and needs replacing. Have you attempted to turn the motor over by hand ?

My new Amana compressor Central Air-Heat Pump hums very loudly

When it hums, is it running? Or does it not run when it hums? I'm assuming it runs when you say you have to turn the therm off to get the noise off.. If it's humming and not running, you have big problemo friend..
