Question about Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook

1 Answer

I am having a problem with the ide controller. I do not know if the hard drive is over heating or if the ide controller is bad. When I put the hard drive in, the the back plate cover back on, when I turn the pc on all I get are white lines crossing the screen, but when I take the back plate off the boot process is ok. Weird huh? Need help please.

I got that error when my IDE to USB cable went bad. Although it could also be bad/corrupt drivers. Can you put the drive on an IDE cable to check it inside a computer without the USB?

Want to know whats the maximum hard drive i can put in my pc it as a bv cuba ms-7301

Generally, you can put 2 devices (hard drives or CD/DVD drives) per IDE chain and 1 device per SATA port. It appears there are 2 IDE chains and 2 SATA ports, so theoretically you could have 6 hard drives hooked up (assuming you don't use an optical drive). Four would need to be IDE, two SATA.

the hard drive IDE cables are flat, ribbon cables, usually grey and about 3 inches wide. do not confuse this with the floppy drive cable, which will look identical, except that it is 2 inches wide.

the cable could be loose on either the motherboard IDE controller end or the hard drive end, so wiggle it in tighter, or unplug and then re-plug it at both ends, and then try to boot. if that does not work, then replace the cable.

if a new cable does not fix it, then the hard drive itself may have failed. install the hard drive in a DIFFERENT working computer as a secondary (slave drive) by installing it to the middle connector of the IDE cable (IDE cables have a connector for the "master" or only drive at the end, and a plug for a "slave" drive in the middle of the cable), and see if you can access it. it will probably show up as the "E" drive under "computer" or "my computer". if it does not show up, check and see if it shows up under "administrative tools>computer management>disk management". if the drive is not showing up, then it is dead. if the drive works in the second computer, then the IDE CONTROLLER is the culprit.

if the motherboard's integrated IDE controller is dead, you may want to try the OTHER IDE controller socket. most computers from that era have 2 IDE controller sockets, and usually attach the hard drive(s) to one, and the cd/dvd rom(s) to the other. since the hard drive cables have plugs for 2 devices, you can attach both the hard drive and a single cd/dvd drive to the 2nd ide controller socket, in cases where the 1st ide controller soocet no longer works. attach the hard drive to the end of the IDE cable, and the cd/dvd drive to the middle of the IDE cable, as the "master" or boot device should always be attached to the end of the IDE cable.

you can also purchase an add-in, pci card ATA/IDE controller card, and use this instead of the motherboard's integrated IDE controller sockets.

My Acer Aspire 5100 Laptop wont detect the hard drive

If it works on another computer then either the ide cable in the acer is bad/loose at either end or the ide controller on the motherboard is bad. I would try a known good ide cable first as if this is the problem it is fixable alot cheaper than a motherboard. Hope this helps.

Ide slot not working

sounds like you have a bad controller. You should have a primary ide controller that is noramaly used by the hard drive, then a secondary used by the optical drive. Try putting the DVD drive on the some ide cable as the hard drive.

Using a Sata Drive with an IDE cable

Depending on how old your system is, even though your current drive is IDE, there might still be SATA support on the motherboard. Look in your manual and find out if it has any SATA connectors. If not, you need to continue using IDE unless you want to purchase a PCI card with SATA connectors on it.

There are many configuration settings, although i personally would hunt down an SCSI hard disk, many will fit from many other models just like IDE ones

Slave drive

if you do know how to install hardrives to your computer, this will be fairly simple.

check the back of your hard drive and look for the pins. there will be a connector there that will indicate if the hard drive is a master or slave. put the jumper into slave.

after doing that. connect your hard drive to the ide cable. since it is a slave hard drive, put it in the 2ndary ide slot on that cable. you can either do this on the primary ide cable or the 2ndary ide cable.

restart your computer.

This means that it cannot detect the hard drive. Try taking it out of the bottom and putting it back in. If this doesn't work, try another hard drive. If the problem still remains, it is a system board IDE controller issue, and replacing the system board is the only option.
