Leaking? cartridge causing cold water to mix with hot when not selected resulting in not getting hot water - only lukewarm

I am afraid I didn't describe the problem correctly. The problem is that I get only lukewarm water on one side and cold on the other. If I shut off the cold water supply, I am then able to get hot water when selecting hot water. If is apparent that the cartridge is somehow allowing the cold water to mix with the hot when the cold water side is not shut off and prevents hot water from arriving even when only hot water is selected. Also even lukewarm water doesn't last long when the cold water supply is not shut off. I have had this cartridge out in the past and there seemed to be only one way to install it because of the keyway. The hot water heater is at a distance from the faucet. Hot water is possible only when the cold water supply is shut off.

When you get the wrong type of water you want when you select hot/cold from a cartridge type mechanism it means the the cart is installed 180 degrees off. reinstall it 180 from where you pull it out.
Also, look for "key-ways" on the Cart and in the body off the faucet. Make sure you're aligned properly when reinserting the Cart.
Hope this helps,

Mike

Tip

Find your only getting Luke warm water @ your faucets??

.

This is a common fault with new to used installed waterheater.

It is call a diptube ,made of pvc in part description. It is located on cold inlet, top of waterheater.

Malfunction of dip tube is usually a fracture caused by age mostly,or faulty install when new and tube was exposed to high heat from welding .

This tube allows the cold water supply to flow into W/heater and exit at bottom where it is heated while pushing already heated water to hot side and to your faucet. If this tube is defective ei...cracked the cold will [leak] mix with the hot before reaching bottom to be heat..thus lukewarm water syndrome. Solution $8 part H/depot>remove coldside copper fittings and pull white pvc out, about 4feet long, less rotted area, install new 3/4 inch pvc dip tube with flange up.

Water in tub is only hot for a few seconds and then turns lukewarm. We have hot water everywhere else.

Hot waterer tank goes on but no hot water

Water heater must be FULL of water first. Be sure to bleed all air out of hot water lines all throughout the unit. Check water in heater by purging the PT valve at the top. (The one with the little lever). If no water comes out, there is no water in the heater. You can't heat water is there's none in it to heat!

We have both hot and cold hoses going into washing machine but cannot get anything but cold or lukewarm water no matter what setting we choose. The pipe leading into the hot water hose feels warm and we...

sounds like the mix valve on the washer is broken and not opening properly -- the mix valve is the valve that both hot and cold water are connected to on the back of the machine.. turn off water valves and remove the hoses,, remove the back panel from the washer -- the mixer is held in place by one little screw,, also mark the wires going to the mixer ( hot/cold ) --- remove the mixer valve and take it down to your local appliance repair shop and match it up to a new one -- install the new mixer and connect wires and panel and then hoses and all will be working good as new.

Yes, this is normal. All newer washer have auto temp control fills. This is to meet energy saving requirements. The less hot water used the more energy saved. Most hot settings on washers give out basically lukewarm water. The detergent made today is made to work well with cooler temperature water, so things will still come out clean.

Water temperature

It sounds like your water inlet valve (also known as a Mixing Valve on some washers) HOT solenoid is sticking open. When you select either a hot or cold wash cycle, separate solenoids open or close to allow only cold water to enter the washer on the cold wash cycles and hot water to enter on the hot cycles. If the hot solenoid stays open, you will have hot water mixing with your cold water during the cold cycles. The result is warm water. I would recommend you replace the water inlet valve. This is a job the average DIYer can do. Please post back with your model number and I can assist you with locating a part number and/or give you specifics on how to access the valve to replace it.
