This indicates that the charging circuit in the laptop is not working and requires repair at the motherboard level. You are fortunate that you have the docking station and you are able charge it. But if you decide to repair I would suggest an estimate.

Sounds like the situation is with the AC adapter detection. try to restore your BIOS defaults and update BIOS if applicable. Test another AC adapter. If that fails, most likely, this is with the motherboard. You may either get a new board, or just continue to charge it using the docking station.

My Dell Latitude D505 will only charge the battery through the docking station. I have used mulitple chargers and none will charge batt outside of the docking station. Any suggestions??

Hi,

Im very sorry to hear that, please follow these simple steps for you to be able to isolate the exact problem.

1. Removed the battery.
2. Connect the laptop directly to the power outlet without using the battery just for the meantime.
3. Turn on the laptop. If the laptop is able to power on, that means that the AC adapter is working fine as well as the DC port. If the laptop is not able to turn on, it maybe the AC adapter itself or the DC port.
4. Try to use another AC adapter if possible, make sure that that AC adapter is working fine. If the laptop is still not turning on, the problem is with the DC port itself. In that case, you will need to replaced the Motherboard itself.

Hope this will help...Thank you for using Fixya...

Check whether or not there is any debris in the docking station connector. Be careful NOT to use a metallic object to remove any debris, since you risk shorting-out a connection and killing your system board.
If that does not resolve the issue, then something has failed within either the laptop or the docking station.
One thing for certain, it sounds as if your battery has reached the end of its usable life and you'll need to buy a new one and recycle the old one.

Try updating to BIOS to version A16 from http://support.dell.com Ensure you are not attached to the docking station when flashing the BIOS. Once updated, connect the 90W adapter to the docking station, connect your laptop to the dock, and power on using the docking station power button.

Dell 620 battery and charger good stll will not charge

Bad? Most likely, that laptop is pretty old, (at least 2 years) surprised that it lasted that long. Sorry, no disresprect, but they are only available as outlet. Of course you can still get support and downloads from Dell.com. Also you can still get batteries, power supplies and etc. (I do not work for Dell.com, nor advertise any of their products) Not that this will do you any good I think. It seems as though the actual module that your power supply plugs into is bad....Imagine that. It's a dell, not the first or last time that I had to buy a new power supply or that happened to me. Also it has somewhat to do with the power surges from the plug that you are in...Please I rather not get into that. Sorry I can't be of any more help. I my opinion, your original thought is pretty close to your solution. Let me know..m_nastasi@hotmail.com

If the docking station is not charging the laptop while docked, it may simply need to be plugged in using the power cord to recharge the battery.

Docking station fror compaq Evo n610c

docking station for my old compaq armada did not "charge seperately" but did supply power to the pc through docking connector and not through the normal ac input, cant say if they have their own power transformers or not, till i go home and take my old docking station apart. Will the computer not power up when plugged in, it normally will run off ac power even when battery is dead or removed.

Try this, with laptop removed from docking unit:

1. Press and hold the laptop power button down, for 10 seconds.
2. Now remove the battery
3. Repeat step one above
4. Let the laptop sit for 10 minutes.
5. Reinstall the battery
6. Make sure docking station is unplugged, and insert laptop into docking station.
7. Plug in power supply (to dock)
8. Start the laptop.
9. IF IT STARTS, let it run a while to see if the battery is charging
10. Remove it from the dock and repeat steps 1-5 above and then go directly to 8 (start without connecting dock).

CONCLUSIONS: If the laptop started in the dock on step 9 but not 10 (only on battery), your battery or power regulator circuit may be damaged. However, if it starts in step 10 but not step 9, your docking station -or its AC power supply may be damaged Let me know how this comes out, please.
