Where can I take a 8mm Handycam for professional repairs? Being such an old camera, is it common to find somewhere locally?

The best way is to locate a Sony authorized service center. A repair like this is usually a fixed cost of $150 or so. Sending it to Sony will result in a complete overhaul for the same cost, including any parts that are needed. The Sony website has a service center locator facility based upon your zipcode.
