Windows 7 does not support some types of audio.The problem is more likely with your sound device or sound card driver.
So Far ive seen creative labs sound cards ,and realtek sound devices have drivers that have the proper codecs to allow almost any audio application to work.
Win 7 does not have alaudio a codec that xp and i think vista did have,without it direct sound and audio will not work,this has a a negitive effect on alot of pc games on the market which now include alaudio on the dvd you buy.
I use a creative ex fi exteme gamer sound card which allows me to hear and do almost anything with sound.
Have a look at the creative soundblaster sound cards.
If the headphones are working it means that it nothing wrong with it..but some setting s..try to see the out-let configuration ..and choose the scheme that you use...usually 2 stereo ...cause the first choice it will be the headset ..and if it has a front separate out let for headset ..it may disable the rest ...so put it in one of the speakers configuration ...2 stereo ..or 2+1 or after case...and take a look what exactly are the out lets ..cause it has to be displayed when you make changes..
My suggestion is to uninstall the Fast Track device, restart and then reinstall the software. Also, not knowing the computer you are working with, I would also suggest that the speakers are not disabled somehow ( IE, Mute button that got accidentlly activated). Was anything else done to the computer between the time is was working and the time it stopped working). If your audio card and and software are working properly, your speakers are the problem.

I am not sure what version of the m track pro driver you are using, but after researching your issued, I was wondering if the driver you are using could be the issue. I went to the M Audio site and located the latest driver for windows 7 64 bit. I have attached the link directly to the driver download page. The driver download link is at the bottom of the page.
Another question....did the computer come with a sound card and if so, did it work properly with the speakers? If so, my only thought is that you need an updated driver for the M Audio.

When I selected your case, I did not realize that the M Audio Fast Track is an external device used to record music, and other audio from outside devices connected thru a USB port.
I took it to simply be another sound card. Looking thru the manual, expecially the troubleshooting section, I found some suggestions that I am sure you have checked, but wanted to be certain as it looks like you have all the basic troubleshooting issues covered:
So, here are the points of interest that I wanted to be certain you had checked in your work on this problem:
Open your application’s audio settings page and check to see if the Fast Track Pro’s ASIO, WDM, or Core Audio drivers have been selected.
> If you’re certain the Fast Track Pro is correctly installed and configured for your audio software, check your signal path. Make sure your inputs are routed correctly by verifying that your application is receiving audio signal. Make sure your outputs are routed correctly so that your signal is sent to your headphones, amp and/or monitors.
> Check your audio connections and cables to make sure everything is plugged in correctly.
> Check if the power button is enabled.
> Check mic/line selector switch to verify that you’ve chosen the proper input.

OK. So, the windows 7 migration has started the issues. I have to believe the M Audio will provide some assistance to you on your migration to windows 7. I believe that we have ruled out all common sense issues that may have solved this issue. I think that the company experts may be the only people who can help you thru this issued. I read the complete manual and can find no other settings to work on. I do not believe that there are any settings on your laptop that you can change to solve this issue either. If I were having this problem, I would be contacting M Audio directly for a solution to this problem.
We have been pretty thurough in our troubleshooting in mhy opinion.

I have already sent you a reply saying that your solution does not work.
I am using an Asus Barebone system with an AMD Athlon II x4 processor and nVidia GT 430 graphics card. Windows 7 (64bit) OS.
I have uninstalled and re-installed the M-Audio sound driver several times - making sure to FIRST install the driver before connecting the M-Audio device.
The Windows Sound panel showing the M-Audio connections cannot be configured to use S/PDIF in 24bit mode - there is no sound when I choose this option. If I select this option then go to 'Properties' and click on the 'Advanced' tab I see a drop-down menu showing a choice between 16 bit and 24 bit. If I select 24 bit and do a sound test I receive a message stating that "The device is being used by another application". However, there is no other application installed on the computer using this application. This is a brand new system and I have not yet loaded any other programs onto the computer because I cannot get the sound card to properly function.
The sound will only operate if I set the choice to 16 bit. However, when I re-boot the computer it defaults back to the 24 bit choice, even though I have click/applied the 16 bit function....
However, if I set the sound to 24bit and plug headphones into the M-Track I can hear sound through them, but not through the speakers.
I am using the latest 64 bit drivers issued by M-Track

i tried your suggestion - it did not work. When i used my fast track with windows xp i used the 1and 2 settings - however, i can only get sound, in windows 7, on s/pdif settings and only on the 16 bit setting. However, i can hear 24 bit settings through headphones on 1 and 2 - but not through speakers. When i used winxp i could hear sound both through headphones and speakers - i did not have to disable anything

I think you are correct in identifying this as a software issue, however, I do not think it is anything to do with codecs. My Fast Track Pro successfully operated in Windows XP and I have downloaded the latest driver to use with Windows 7. I am sure M-Audio would include the correct codecs for their upgrade. Anyway, I have also downloaded and applied Windows Codec Pack v 2.7.0 and it made no difference - Fast Track Pro still does not function on 24 bit setting.
I do not think you understand why people use an audio interface device instead of Creative Lab sound card. The Audio Interface (i.e., such as Fast Track Pro) is used for specialised 24 bit audio recording.
Standard computer sound cards are not good for specialised recording. They are fine for games and other 'general' computer requirements, but not for good sound recording - this is why there is an industry manufacturing audio interface devices to use instead of sound cards such as Creative Labs
