The scanner lamp is probably bad on that side, it can be replaced if you want

Sometimes you may see vertical streaks/black lines on the faxes you receive. Either your machine's
primary corona wire for printing may be dirty, or the sending party's fax scanner may be dirty. Clean
your primary corona wire. I recommend placing the drum unit on a drop cloth or large disposable paper
to avoid spilling and scattering toner.
1. Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the tab from right to left several times.
2. Return the tab and snap it into the Home position, (Caution: If the tab is not at the Home position, printed pages may have vertical stripes).
3. Reinstall the drum unit into the machine.
4. Close the front cover.
5. Plug in the power cord first, and then plug in the telephone cord.
or ask the sender to make a copy to see if the problem is with the sending machine.
Try receiving from another fax machine.
If the problem continues, call Brother Customer
Service at: 1-800-284-4329 (in USA) or 1-877-BROTHER (in Canada).

if your RECEIVED faxes look good, then leroyal is dead on. you will need a new CIS which stands for contact image sensor. if you have an authorized brother service center nearby, they may be able to do it for 100 to 150.00, depending on their pricing of course. if rec'd faxes are bad also, pull drum out and make sure the blue tab on top of drum is all the way to the right side, although that usually only leaves about a 1/2" black band.

The most common cause of your problem is debris in the paper feeder. To fix this, lift up the feeder panel and clean out the feeder channel. Sometimes loose dirt or a scrap of paper will find its way in front of the scanner lens. A can of compressed air will usually do the trick here unless it's a smudge of some sort in which case it will need to be cleaned directly with a soft cloth.

Have you tried both drum and toner supplies? cause it sounds like a drum fault, if you have tried a new drum and toner, and it is doing it when printing internal reports, receiving fax's and copying then you have a tecnical issue to do with charge and this would likely render machine unecomical to repair (unless you can find a bad contact with drum on machine). If it receives faxs clearly but copys black then it is different issue (ie optics).
