Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I'm trying to install a wireless router for my laptop using the High speed internet land line connection. The D-Link DIR-601 displays a message that say's 'Router Setup cannot run over a wireless connection.' I called Dell and they wanted over two hundred dollars to renew the warranty and wouldn't help me without payment...so I hung up and I'm hoping someone can help me with this! Thanks!

The router is clear (Router Setup cannot run over a wireless connection) NEVER try to setup the wireless settings trough the wireless connection on ANNY router (I'm impressed it is a verry intelligent router) a lot of routers will permit wireless setup trough wireless but obviously this one wont

Connect a CAT5 patch cable from one of the router's ethernet ports to your computer, than setup your wireless connection...

Have fun

I don't think it's Windows 8. Connect a ethernet cable fron D-Link to computer. Is your Wireless Adapter Enabled on the computer. Unplug the D-Link, shut down the computer, unplug, remove battery, plug in D-Link , allow it to selftest, plug in computer, boot normally.

Can't connect a new laptop to router. Are there any updates to the DIR 601 that I can load to see if it will connect?

Connect a LAN cable from the D-Link to your laptop/computer's LAN port, open the browser on your laptop/computer and enter the D-Link's configuration URL..
http://192.168.0.1
The default login = admin
The default PW = blank (just press Enter) You can now change the default admin password.
You can now configure the wireless settings. (WPA or WPA2 encryption) Now configure the wireless card in your computer/laptop with the router's wireless settings. To secure your wireless network from unauthorized access, please click on this link and follow my instructions :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3559128-wireless_router_security

Follow this instructions:1. connect via hard wired connection using your PC (network cable)2. open your internet explorer or any browser.3. type the numbers 192.168.1.1 or 10.1.1.1 on the address bar4. you will be routed to your router's settings, type admin for USERNAME: and admin for PASSWORD.5. look for the basic setup/settings6. look for the wireless settings7. under your SSID comes the WEP or WPA-PSK option8. that is your wi-fi password, then modified it and remember the password you use for you will need to enter it on your pc when you are connecting via wireless connection.you can select ASCII for password. it should be alpha numeric or combination of letters and numbers.9. select save and apply. then you are good to go.

How can I assign a password to my D-Link DIR 601 Router after it has already been installed without a password? My network is unsecure and I want to secure it.

sure
access the router from internet explorer by typing the default gateway IP address in the address line of the browser: 192.168.0.1 is the default
you should get a login window, username is: admin leave the password blank, and you should gain access to the router web interface.
from there you go to the wireless tab, select enable wireless security, select WPA2 and use a 10 digit code (I use an old phone number I can't forget like 8009993355) save settings and you have a secure router.

The Dlink DIR 601 N 150 is using 802.11g to connect to my new laptop, rather than 802.11n. The router is set for mixed mode. The laptop supports 802.11 b/g/n. Shouldn't the router switch up automatically...

Yes it should.
Be sure that you have installed and are using the manufacturer's drivers and support software for the WiFi adapter in your laptop.
If you're using stock Microsoft drivers and support software, you'll only be able to use the 802.11G at the best.
Tell us the make and model of the laptop and I'll try to find the appropriate drivers.

D-link DIR-635 router

Hi, I am assuming that you can connect to your router's web based interface (192.168.0.1). On a PC LAN wired to the router, open a browser; Type "192.168.0.1"; Log-in username/admin and password/(blank); Go to Tools > Misc and the option to select the WAN speed (bottom); Lock the speed down on the WAN port of your router to 10Mbps (Some versions do not have this feature). Hope this works for you. If not pls post back with your modem brand/model. You may also want to log the IP settings (IP Add, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, DNS Servers) of the PC that is directly connected to the modem when you can access the Internet when not using the router. Good luck and kind regards.
