The first thing is to practice on a copy of your photo so as not to spoil the original. Photoshop Elements or Photoshop are the standard photo-editing programs, and there are many others. Google for "Photoshop Alternatives" . Picasa software has several easy ways to edit various aspects of a photo (cropping, brighten, contrast, etc.) Try to play with that. There are many online tutorials on photography find one that you can learn from. An important point is to have a good monitor with correct color settings , as a bad monitor will force you to adjust a photo in the wrong way. Enjoy.
